In MediaCenter 12 I didn't used to have any problems viewing Theater mode or 3D visualizations (such as 3D Cube). Since upgrading to MediaCenter 13, I get the following message:

"Error starting Direct3D engine (hardware not capable of windowed mode."

My hardware hasn't changed at all.

Any clues as to what may be going on? I can live without the fancy animations, but it'd be nice to have the options.

I'm using Windows XP Home edition with SP3 on a Pentium 4 (3GHz) with 2GB RAM.

Is your GPU  the internal video on the motherboatd or an addon card? (Which one)

We use the same DirectX 9 system in version 12 and version 13.  We did update to the latest SDK for v13, but this shouldn't make any difference.

Maybe try updating video drivers.

It's a Radeon X300.

Thanks, Matt. Updating the ATI drivers did the trick and all is working again.

I also get a direct3d error in mc13.  But it's very weird, because of the following:  I reloaded my laptop with a clean install.  MC 12 and 13 worked before, but after the clean install MC13 will give an error in Theater View.  I have tried reloading drivers, but it didn't work.  The only thing different is I used nLite to create a 'slimmed down' version of XP because my laptop is 4+ years old.  Could there be some component in Windows that needed to be installed?

Error is:  Error starting Direct3D engine (Error creating Direct3D device)
Dell 8600 Inspiron-512 MB, Nvidia FX go5200 video, XP Pro, MC 13.0.143

The slimmed down version could be the problem.

Try changing the Theater View options for frame rate and for high quality drawing.  It may not work, but it's worth a shot.

You could also try re-installing DirectX:

Sorry, I've been busy for a while!  Changing settings and/or reinstalling DirectX didn't fix the problem.  Anything else I can try?

It's a Dell laptop and I have the latest one from there.  Do you think it's OK to use the latest nvidia driver from the nvidia site?  I guess I could always do system restore if things go awry...
