all kinds of video issues
« on: January 21, 2009, 11:11:26 am »

hey all -

i've been having a couple video issues since i upgraded to MC13.

1. when in theater view, occasionally the black background of the default obsidian skin will change to white (making all text unreadable). this happens usually when i hit back more than once in succession. i use the bottom half of the "now playing" window for track info, but if i have a visualisation selected (such as equalizer), the visualisation does not show up.

2. DVD playback is all kinds of issues. stuttering, crashing if i skip chapters quickly, etc. the most unusual is the video window disappearing when i hit play on a dvd. if i then hit CTRL+4 to back out regular theatre view, and CTRL+4 again, most of the time it comes back. sometimes, it does not.

my machine is a P4 2.6, 2GB RAM, radeon 9800 XT video card (drivers updated a few days ago). the only way to get it to act right (i.e. not have a white background) is to restart my computer.

any thoughts?
thanks!

The white background sounds like a video driver issue.  Maybe try downloading and installing again.

For DVD playback, this guide may be helpful:

i downloaded and reinstalled my video drivers and it worked well until i tried to play a dvd. then MC crashed, and when i restarted it, it went to the white background in theatre view again. i poked around in the video driver settings and i saw it could log errors. i turned that on and grabbed the error next time it went white-screen. don't know if this is helpful or not, but it's something...

thanks for your help and patience. :)

Try a google search to see if you can find out more about the version of the video driver you're using.  The latest is not always the best.

You don't have that 9800 XT overclocked, do you?  Or flashed from a 9800 Pro to an XT firmware?

I haven't used any of my 9800s in a while (in fact, I just gave my 9800 XL away a month ago), but up until then they worked with the current Catalyst drivers (and certainly with MC).  They shouldn't be having that sort of problem, for sure.
