Not getting consistent problems with FFDShow and EVR
« on: February 24, 2009, 03:48:05 pm »

This one's a bit weird: FFDShow with EVR looks best by far on my system. But I have this rather strange problem: Sometimes I get no picture, only a black field the size of the picture. And when I look at the EVR filter I can see that no frames are coming through there. But if I start and stop playback anywhere from twice to 5-6 times the picture's suddenly there, without any problems. The same FFDShow settings with EVR works without a hitch in another DirectShow player, but I prefer to use MC, of course! ;) Is there any way to find out what's happening here?

are you talking about ifo/vob files? because that is where i see this alot. and everybody in this household already knows to stop playback and restarts to get things going again. you get the black picture only when going to an other part of a dvd file, not during a movie? because for me it never happens during a movie, but always when the movie goes to dvd menu or extra material, or from there to the menue..

and i sincerely hope nobody tells me to check the wiki for the directshow stuff (thanks glynor, great stuff), but i can recite that backwards just as good as forwards..

Yes, it happens only when starting the movie. I never use VOBs, I rip my DVDs to the hard drive with DVDShrink and reauthor them to only contain the movie itself. Do you mean that this doesn't happen with the actual DVD, only with the ripped ones? I haven't watched a DVD directly from the disk in a looong time...

well.. i also seldom see dvds direct. mostly from hd. and i rip them but with some of the menue left. mostly i set my vids over to mkv, it is just when i need the menue and different tracks that i rip them as dvd files (so ifo/vob as far as i understand).
but it happens with both, now that i think about it.. well surely it happens with the ripped ones. and not always..  :)

I have seen this also and with the same filter path setup in zoomplayer it does not happen.

I am not able to reproduce the problem.  Do you use any particular settings, such as cropping, use FFDShow for post processing, etc.?

I've seen this occasionally with the RealMedia Directshow filter, and it also works fine in another app (WMP in this case)
Never really seen a need to investigate further, I can provide a log next time it does this if it'll be any help?

Cheers

In this particular case, was "Crop Edges" option on?  I see there is a problem with Crop Edges/FFDShow Video Decoder/EVR combination.  I can not find any problem with DVD playback, as there is no "Crop Edges".

asked my wife... she is using the video part more than i am..  :).  but it is often with dvd files, and with dvd's, but never with that 'other format' (=mkv). it looks like it happens when the dvd 'jumps to an other format', so when there is some extra material that is more in television format to something that has more a widescreen, so when those things change (to look smart i could have checked the formats, but i guess you understand me), aspectratio i guess. i have the playback alsways on original aspect ratio. only cccp, and windows xp sp3.

i can check some dvds the next days. does logging help? other things i should check...  :)
paste the filters ofcource.

thanks for looking into it yaobing.

maybe also.. when it turns black, forinstance because it went back to th dvd menue, stop playback and restart the movie, brings you back to where it turned black but with normal screen. and when the screen is black, there is still sound..

Do you know whose video card you use?  ATI, Nvidia, Makita?

does logging help?

I am not sure if logging will reveal anything.  Email me a log anyway.

I mentioned before that the Crop Edges / FFDShow Video Decoder / EVR combination produces black screen.  I found out that it only happens when the video is MPEG-2, for example JRiver TV recording jtv file (or any other file type that contains MPEG-2 video, except DVD/ifo).  I believe this is an FFDShow bug.  Older versions of FFDShow (I tested with a version that is quite old, back when it was called "FFDShow MPEG-4 video decoder", and another one not as old, but was built on Jul. 16 2007) do not have this problem.  Non-MPEG-2 video seems to be fine.

here some last info... with the dvd i watched yesterday it happened two times. i attached two screenshots to explain when it happens. the screen is set to fit the window. the first is from the trailers on the dvd. as you can see the original screen is square. so the black borders at the site are from mc (the blackest). after the trailers the dvd wants to go to an other 'format' like in the second shot. stil set to fit the window. but its this switch wich gives a black screen, with sound running. stopping playback are start again, it goes on where stopped but with image. anything else i could send...

I still have the same problem, of course (since no reason is found and fixed yet). My graphics card is a Radeon 3870, latest drivers, Windows 7 (same problem on XP when I try that partition of the dual boot HDPC). I usually have to stop and start the movie 3-4 times now. Btw wonder what I was smoking when I wrote the thread title! ;)

I've been looking for my secret stash all night, but the problem is that it's so secret even I have no idea where it is!
