Using PS3 as UPnP Media Receiver with MC13
« on: March 06, 2009, 12:28:58 pm »

I decided to use the PS3 as a UPnP Media Receiver with MC13.

I selected it because it is very cheap (I don't use it for games). I use it as a Blu-Ray player plus a Media Receiver.

I use it for music & pictures. Video does not work well - stutters (probably because of big files streaming over a wireless connection).

The following MC13 Options make it work:

Receiver: Advanced
Shrink Large Images - No
Replace Empty Genre - No
Use Flat URLs - No
Include SessionID - No
No Server Header - No
Allow Visual Content - Yes (required for pictures and video)
Filter International Characters - No
Skip Child Count - No
Omit Host Portion of URL - No
DLNA - Yes

Question for the group:

Is it possible to get graphical interface (Theater View is perfect) or do I need a HTPC to do this?

Thanks for posting that.  Will "DLNA" by itself make it work?

It's not possible for MC to change the UI on the PS3, as far as I know.

I just verified that you can play music with only DLNA turned on. However, if you want pictures, you also have to set Allow Visual Content on.

I will edit the initial post to reflect the adjusted settings.

Thanks very much for taking time to check.

We'll add it to our list of UPnP servers in MC.

I bought a couple of these Linksys power line network adaptors recently:

http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/PLTE200

They claim up to 85Mbps.  I haven't tried to measure the speed, but they do work well.  I had a pair of older powerline adaptors that worked, but not too well.

Looks like a good solution. For now I'll limit my use of the PS3 UPnP to music & pictures. I have lots of DVD & Blu-Ray (~1500). I watch the originals anyway. I only rip the ones I want to put on an iPod/iPhone.

I'll eventually get a PC based solution instead of the PS3. At which time I'll do more over the network. A good option might be:

Hi, I am fairly new to this MC13 application but I have been using my PS3 as a media receiver for about a year now, mainly using WMP11. I started to get an error (DLNA 7522) which I think is to do with the amount of music files I had, some sort of limitation within WMP11. It played video and images just fine but error'd on the music, so I have been looking around trying to find something to replace WMP11.
I am just trialing MC13 at the moment but I have to say that initially, MC13 looks like a great product, very configurable with nice graphical touches such as 3d menu's etc.

I too were having a similar issue where for both images and video it was only displaying the same file structure as for music and so I have ticked the 'Allow Visual Content' and now I am able to browse all media. I cannot play any video files however; it shows up as unsupported media. Now I know that the PS3 can play these as they play just fine under WMP11, but I was wondering if it was a setting that I had overlooked?

Also, if I may make a suggestion, the PS3 seems to be an extremely popular media receiver and if you add this receiver in your drop down box in UPnP options with all the optimum settings it would be very useful. Also if JRiver were to write an application for the PS3, it could probably have the same interface as your 'Theatre View'. There has been a recent software update which came with a clever photo browser so perhaps the next one could have your software in it?

Thanks and regards

Spencer

I have read both posts regarding streaming music from MC13 to PS3 and still my PS3 cannot find any server when MC13 UPnP Server is turned on.

I am currently having problems setting up MC13's UPnP Server to show up for my PS3. I have never used the server feature before, so I'm kind of new to it. Right now I have the current settings:

UPnP Server:

     Options:

          Advanced:
          x     Skip Child Count
          x     DLNA

When I go into PS3's search for Media Servers, nothing ever shows up. My PS3 is connected to the internet, as well as my computer, via wireless connection. It's configured to enable media server search too.

Am I missing something here, or can someone help me?

Do you mean the PS3 software version? If so, I have the latest version 2.76.

Okay so I narrowed down that AVG's firewall is causing the issue. However, I'm not sure what type of rule to make to allow for streaming to my PS3. What kind of rule should I make in order allow my PS3 to see MC UPnP Server?
