For importing and tagging media files (mp3) I use two views:
Tab1:   Pane View, AlbumArtist(auto), Album, Group by Album, large thumbnail (1 view)
Tab2:   MyComputer, Disc Directory, Single Folder (1 view)

MC13 crashes every time when I follow the steps:
  • Select the media files (one album) in the directory view (Tab2)
  • Import the selected files (right click, Import Into Library). The specific media files have not been imported in MC before (don't know, if that matters).
  • Alter the Album Tag in the ActionWindow, i.e. change „Greatest Hits“ to „Greatest Hits 2009“
  • Click on Tab1 (Pane View) -> crash

MC13 crashes immediately (and so did MC12 before the upgrade)
A black message box pops up (Microsoft Visual C++ Library), without any message text. I don’t even get a log entry of the crash. At least I didn’t find anything.

I don’t use this workflow very often, and have learned to step around the problem, but maybe there is an answer for this strange behavior.

Normally I rip a CD in view tab2 and then click to view tab1. The view switches fine.

There are many other defined views in my audio tree, but only the two tab views are in use at crash time.

Thank you for every help to get rid of this annoyance.

Thanks for the report.  Could you check the link called "Stability" in my signature?  It has information on how to proceed.

Thank you JimH

What I did in the past:
1. My installed MC12/MC13 versions are the actual available public versions 12.0.534 / 13.0.132
2. No plugins in MC13 exept for the ones that come with the MC installer
3. I use a different virus checker now than at the beginning of the problem. But I will give it a check!
4. The crash occurres in MC12 since a long time. Since that I changed my PC, moved from WinXP to WinVista, installed MC12 from scratch, updated to MC13
6. Auto-import is off
7. Have the most actual device drivers installed for display & audio

The crash occurs when switching tabbed views.

e-mailed my crash logs to logs at jriver. Hope they give a hint.

Try updating your video driver.

Updated nVidia Driver Package from v. 181.20 to 182.08

MC still crashes, but I get a readable message box now:

Does the log in your mailbox say anything more?

Look for "crash" in the log.  It may tell you what is happening.

Unfortunately "crash" does not exist in the MC13 crash log.

The following points are essential for MC to crash:
1. Import all mp3-files of an album (in the same dierctory). Ist must be the first import of these files (delete from library and re-import does not lead to a crash)
2. Make changes in the album tag (important!, no change, no crash), i.e. "Greatest Hits" to "Greatest HitsXYZ"
3. Click on tab1 (pane view) to switch to another view
MC13 crashes

Thanks for the logs.  They don't turn up anything immediately obvious.

I tried setting up the same test here, but it isn't crashing.

I wonder if you sent a library backup to the same email address if we might have better luck using your exact audio view?

Thanks.

@Matt
Have sent my library-backup to your mailbox.

@JimH
My system info is in my first post at the top.

I really appreciate your help, thank you!

Something occurred to me:
I use genres with german Umlauts (like Hörbuch=audiobook, ...) and I filter my views with this genres. Could this be a problem?

Thanks for the library backup.

I think having the Tag Action window open when switching to Audio is running you out of memory.

It's getting the list of playlists (you have 4111) that the visible files (59,000 and change) are in.  This needs to be optimized, because it's obviously never been tested with this extreme of a case.

Stay tuned.

Oh, it's the playlists for every album (in the tree playlist/album)
My iPod-car-kit calls for a playlist per album. I used a script (thanks to Mr ChriZ) to generate them.
Now, as my iPod is synchronized, I can get rid of them.

But.. that leads to the question: How can I delete this bunch of playlists fast

@Matt:
You did a great job to help me! A big thank you!

Select the parent and press delete.

However, we hope this will get much faster next build so that it's not such a problem.
