Hello MC13 lovers! I'm a happy (new) user of MC13 running it as a lib server on a Windows Home Server.
However I'm having difficulties in creating a usable view for the MC13 family members that want to
browse our family music/pictures and movies.

In time I created an extensive directory tree based on dates for pictures and movies and
on Artists/Group names for music. When I import the lot into MC13 and present it the views
are not usable. Photo's and Movies are categorised in a way we can't find back the correct
movies. Photo's can be sorted in many ways but none of them seem to be usable.

With music there are definitely great views, but none of them is complete. Due to the way
the music is categorised based on tag info the views are not correct/complete.

I know that most views are based on tag info and many files require the correct field info,
but with many hundreds of thousands of files that is an almost lifetime job. (Even with the
best taggers in town...)

To put it all in short: Isn't there a working way to present the music files, photo's and movies
based on the disk location tree? (which is also in the file/tag info in the library...)

I know you can use drives & devices but this is outside of the library server/database.
I do have looked into the "disk location.jvi" view supplied in another post on this forum, but
this doesn't work via the library server... The "root" does not open. It remains empty for some
reason... (or does it hang forever due to the large amount of files??)

Does anybody has the same problems  and found a good solution???

I'm not sure this is what you mean, but....

MC can move movies to reflect the organization in MC.  Try right clicking on one or two files and choose Library Tools/Rename Files from Properties.  If you check Directories and not Names, you can move the file.

Try a few before you do very many.

What I meant was precisely the other way around, I have build a full directory tree outside MC13
on my Windows Home Server OS..

Something like this:
 \\enforcer\videos\(2001) family\...
 \\enforcer\videos\(2002) office\...
...
 \\enforcer\music\A\Abba\(2001) Greatest Hits\...
 \\enforcer\music\B\Beatles\(1965) White Album\...
....
 \\enforcer\pictures\(2001-09) Vacation\...
 \\enforcer\Pictures\(2005-02) Skiing\...
....

I then installed MC13 and imported music into the library,
pictures and video's based on the above mentioned shares:
\\enforcer\music, \\enforcer\videos, \\enforcer\pictures

But I cannot browse the music, video's and pictures based on the
original tree layout. The Video view in MC13 for instance presents
the files with the original filenames sorted on date. The same with
the pictures. Music is presented by Artist or Album based on Tag
info.

In all 3 cases I would like to see the original tree list (as on the Home
server) instead of the filteres/sorted views.

In the client version of MC13 there is a disk/tree option, but this
works outside the library which would make the use of the library
superfluous...

i know you looked at the disk location.jvi, but i dont know that one so maybe i suggest something that is in there:

have you tried to make a new view. then when you add a category, choose: filepath.

edit: i also have a disklocation.jvi.. dont know if i made it myself.. but that one is also very slow. the reason for that is the use of IsMiising in an expression. when that one is also in your disclocation, take it away, its only handy for maintainance, imo. and it slows things down dramaticaly, because it is checking all the files if they are there.

Tried that, when I'm connected to the Library server via a client and then add a new, empty
view, and add a category, choosing: filepath I see only local files, folders and the network.
But this is all local from my PC, not viewed from the library server point of view.

When I would add the path to the library server I would create a view that works
seperately via an UNC path and therfore bypass the library I guess...

In that case there's no reason to setup a library server as each client would use
it's own path to the files.

I thought that the strength of using a library server would be that changes to the library
contents would be only managed on one location and all connected pc's would always
have the latest changes updated.

And even when I select the unc path, like \\enforcer\music and continue
the view shows an empty screen with a pane "Searching for files" and nothing
happens. I can't browse any tree.

Under the "Unassigned" field I see the music files but not in a tree format...

At this point I'm stuck...

Hello all,

I solved it myself: instead of focussing on tree-browsing I built my own view
and sorted it on filename (path) and sub-sorted the images in the group on it's name.
And on top of that I edited the view so the correct info is shown.

Now all pictures, movies and music is perfectly shown, just the way I wanted.
By resizing the thumbnails even large picture folders show up perfectly.
