Help setting up Hauppauge HD PVR
« on: May 22, 2009, 12:29:21 am »

I just got an  Hauppauge HD PVR and can't figure out how to set it up with MC13. I have it working with other software but would like MC13 since I use it for all my audio and video. I'm using windows 7 and have tried it on Vista too.I just can't figure it out.

You need to have a recent version of MC13.  Build 170 is on the MC13 board, at the top.

You need to find out if Hauppauge has drivers.  Vista drivers should work.

Go to TV view in MC (Drives & Devices > Television).  Click Configure... > Settings..., you should see "Hauppauge HD PVR Capture Device (analog)" listed under Devices.  Choose the device and click Configure... button.  Accept all defaults by clicking OK.  Click OK to exit Television Options window.

Now run channel scanning by clicking Configure... > Scan for channels.  Uncheck "Scan for digital channels," and check "Scan for analog channels."  Check "Cable" for "Analog scanning type" (not essential since the device is connected to neither cable nor antenna).  Choose "Hauppauge HD PVR Capture Device (analog)" from the list of devices (important if you have multiple analog devices on your computer).  Choose your country from the list of countries.  Click Next to let MC finish scanning.  MC will find three video input lines.  They will appear as channels as follows:

Composite Hauppauge HD PVR Capture Device
SVideo Hauppauge HD PVR Capture Device
YRYBY Hauppauge HD PVR Capture Device

You play one of these "channels" depending on which input you hooked it up with.  Sorry, MC can not control your Cable/Satellite box to change actual channels.

Email me a log.  yaobing at jriver dot com

It may have something to do with Windows 7 though.

Additionally, go to TV view, Configure... > Settings..., click "Copy TV related filter info to clipboard" and put that in the email to me too.

Sorry I did not make myself clearer.  You sent only one of the two pieces I asked.

Turn on MC logging before you try running the device.  Here is how:

Help > Logging...

Under "Logging Options", check "Output to a log file".  Under "Types of events to log" make sure at least "TV" and "Playback" checkboxes are checked (you may leave all of them checked).

After trying to use the device and get an error, go back to Help > Logging..., and click "Click to email" link.

Hi Garry,

Thanks for the log files.

Your device failed because MC could not find ArcSoft Mpeg2 demultiplexer filter.

You must install ArcSoft Total Media Extreme software that comes with the device.  We depend on the above ArcSoft filter for this device to work.

I did install ArcSoft Total Media Extreme and all drivers. Windows 7 has compatability problems with Total Media Theater, but studio opens just fine. I can watch or record live video within it. I tried with Windows 7 and XP with the same resulsts. Is thier a way I can check to see if the ArcSoft Mpeg2 demultiplexer filter is installed? Maybe its not registering??

Windows 7 could be totally different, but on XP, the filter is hosted in the following file:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Mpeg Engine\ArcDemux.ax

If it is properly registered, you would find the following registry keys in RegEdit:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D5F9370B-E232-464F-BE29-A885B1249190}
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D5F9370B-E232-464F-BE29-A885B1249190}\InprocServer32

Under the InprocServer32 key you should find the above file path.

Ok, I found the Arcsoft filter(ArcDemux.ax). It was installed in C:\ Program Files\Arcsoft\Total Media Extreme\Codecs. I re-registered it. Now I'm able to configure the HD PVR. What directshow filters are you using? Audio drops alot.

Garry

Thanks for your help so far ;D

For analog TV we do not let user choose filters.  But for this particular device, MC attempts to load one of the following two filters:

ArcSoft Audio Decoder HD
ArcSoft Audio Decoder

They are hosted in files ASAudio.ax and ASAudioHD.ax respectively.  You probably should be able to find them in the same folder where you found the demultiplexer filter.  Try registering them.

Right after my last post I went and registered Arcsoft Video @ Audio (ASAudio.ax & ASVideo.ax) and have no black screen or audio dropouts. All seems pretty good, except for the guide. Every time I try to install-load mc2xml I get 'Out of memory'.

I am not sure what is causing this.  It could be an mc2xml.exe problem.  In any case, if you only have Hauppauge HD PVR device, guide data is not going to be useful.  Firstly you will not be able to produce a set of channels to associate the guide data with.  Secondly you will not be able to tune to the channels in MC even if the channels existed.

I think Crossfire tab or whatever with check box was not there in earlier versions of the driver and they added it later with new driver version.
