I've been researching XMP, IPTC, EXIF etc. lately to see which "standards" exist. There's chaos, but some light in the tunnel.

For example, Windows Live Photogallery (WPLG) writes face tags, keywords, descriptions, etc. to embedded XMP data in jpegs, pngs etc.. WPLG syncs iptc/exif with XMP and Vista and Win7 actually decodes this data properly and you can see the properties in win explorer.

As far as I understand, Flickr can display face tagging data based on wplg's tagging scheme. This sounds like an emerging standard to me.

Most importantly, lightroom uses XMP and allows tagging JPGs and RAW files.

For WLPG, it's a tad more subtle... WLPG writes both IPTC and XMP for categories and ratings.
IPTC seems to be a fairly old standard and is the most supported for keywords and ratings. XMP is the most recent and includes IPTC and EXIF data and is extensible (WLPG uses it to write people tags for instance). XMP is currently the only standard for tagging RAW files (with sidecar files).
