Large Visual OSD "Time Bar" In Theater View
« on: September 02, 2009, 12:32:26 pm »

Has there been any consideration to adding something like this?  I particularly like the one in Win7 Media Center - it is a simple progress bar at the bottom of the screen that shows the start and end times of the current recording or live program and the current watching position.  It also shows the current time of day up in the right corner.  I know the standard controls in MC are shown at the top if you move the mouse up there but in my opinion it is too small and not useful on a TV in Theater View.

The OSD has a position.  Up and Down arrows activate.

I've seen that, but in my opinion just numbers is not as good as a graphical indicator (especially for a quick check).  Also, the numbers don't really have much significance when watching live programs (the total time keeps growing instead of showing you when it is supposed to end).

I agree. Win 7's implementation is pretty good for this. I think it's finally time for MC to incorporate this feature ;-). The numbers don't cut it especially when doing DVD-style seeks (ff/rew CTRL+Left/right arrow). They don't update automatically and the OSD doesn't stay on screen. It's difficult to know where you are. This actually goes for all non-dvd video material, not just TV.

I agree too, the OSD for Theater View really needs a bit of work to make it a bit more user friendly and "mpdern", certainly progress bars would help this as they are much easier to understnd at a quick glance and look a lot better (in my opinion) than raw text/numbers.

I agree too and have been asking for this for a while.  Just look at many Blu Ray discs or a TiVo which gives a bar that fills up as you proceed--with lines at each quarter waypoint.  This gives a much faster view of one's position.

With a much more advanced OSD (not just text) there could be a lot more to expand to...all the adjustments could use bars (brightness, contrast, etc.)

Think 3-D and shiny, the best in user interfaces...

Yes, but that is not useful when watching video/tv in display view.

Agree, and anyway the playing now progress marker has no start/end point indicators which makes it only somewhat useful anyway in my opinion.  It really should have a start, end indicator and maybe even a 1/2 way marker too.

I guess I will have to give up on this but without some graphical progress indicator during video/tv playback I will have to use a different program.  So this is my final plea...

I still want this too. Even something like the -------|-- type OSD as used with video image settings would probably do the trick for now.

Request duly noted.  I agree it could be neat.

A nice graphical position bar was added to Media Center 15.0.145.

This build (or newer) should be public in a week or so.
