Special Characters
« on: October 01, 2009, 07:35:33 pm »

Using "Rename, Move, & Copy Files" with a path of "[Album Genre]\[Album Artist (auto)]\[Album]" used to work great. It used to replace special characters like ":" and "/" with "_"... which was great for a file name. HOWEVER, now 14 replaces special characters with "\", which it then interprets as a new subfolder. Not at all what I want. What's worse, the Library Sync function still does it the old (and safe/correct) way and uses the "_" character. I just really screwed up my library. Not happy.  :(

Try a restore.  MC does automatic backups.

When using this tool, try a few before you do very many.

I can't reproduce this.  It's using underscores, just like I'd expect.

Any tips for making it happen?

Sure, happens on both my systems, every time.

Desktop:
Media Center 14.0.71 Registered -- C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 14\
Microsoft Windows XP Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
Intel Pentium 4 2797 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 2096 MB, Free - 1111 MB

Laptop:
Media Center 14.0.71 Registered -- C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 14\
Microsoft Windows Vista 6.0 Service Pack 2 (Build 6002)
Intel Core 2 1993 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 4183 MB, Free - 1464 MB

So here are my Rename, Move & Copy File settings...

Base Path: J:\Music Library\
Path Rule: [Album Genre]\[Album Artist (auto)]\[Album]

Filename Rule: [Artist] - [Track #] - [Name]

My data is...
Album Genre: Vocalese
Album Artist: Eddie Jefferson
Album: Body and Soul/Eddie Jefferson

Yields the following for track 5 (for example):
J:\Music Library\Vocalese\Eddie Jefferson\Body and Soul\Eddie Jefferson\Eddie Jefferson - 05 - So What.mp3

You can see how it took the album "Body and Soul/Eddie Jefferson" and turned it into two folders.

Version 13 would have produced:
J:\Music Library\Vocalese\Eddie Jefferson\Body and Soul_Eddie Jefferson\Eddie Jefferson - 05 - So What.mp3

Thanks for looking into this.

Another example...
Album Genre: Gypsy Jazz
Album Artist: Eddie Lang / Joe Venuti
Album: 1920's and 1930's Sides (1 of 2)

Yields the following for track 5 (for example):
J:\Music Library\Gypsy Jazz\Eddie Lang\Joe Venuti\1920's and 1930's Sides (1 of 2)\Eddie Lang _ Joe Venuti - 05 - Sunshine.mp3

You can see how it took the Album Artist "Eddie Lang / Joe Venuti" and turned it into two folders. However, correctly used the "_" in the file name!

Version 13 would have produced:
J:\Music Library\Gypsy Jazz\Eddie Lang _ Joe Venuti\1920's and 1930's Sides (1 of 2)\Eddie Lang _ Joe Venuti - 05 - Sunshine.mp3

Thanks for looking into this.

I can verify this behavior. The AC/DC albums that I recently ripped are now stored as such:
My Music\AC\DC\1979 - Highway To Hell\AC_DC - Highway To Hell - 01 - Highway To Hell

I've got XP - MCE as my OS. To be clear, I ripped these albums and then used Rename, Copy & Move on them. A few older songs are stored under an AC_DC directory.

I'd previously noticed this rename behavior and assumed this was my issue. I tend to forget which slash is which if I'm not paying close attention. My slashes in the example above are exactly as they are in my library and file system.

One similarity between Jeff and my naming schemes that I notice is that we both include the field with the special character in a directory name and a file name (and only see the problem with the directory). I don't know why that would be related, but since Matt couldn't reproduce the problem I figure it's worth pointing out.

I too can confirm the problem. A "forward" slash character in a field value that is picked by the directory path rule is replaced with the backslash character instead of the underscore character and that creates an excess subfolder. The filename rule works as before and a slash character is replaced with the underscore character.

I attached a couple of screenshots of the behavior.

Looks like the same issue I reported back in early August:

In a coming build:
Changed: Forward slashes in fields no longer output a new directory when using Rename, Move, & Copy Files.
