The same transceiver on my laptop works flawlessly.

Ive tried the jriver reciever and also without it. Both ways give me the message. The jriver receiver is a hp reciever and probably does the same thing as my built in one on my hp laptop.

Chriz is using a Dell:

This is a Dell Dimension Machine Vista x64.  I can try it on an XPS laptop tomorrow.

Kingstyles has an HP laptop:
I have windows vista on a hp laptop that has its own remote window ...

Both are Vista 64.  Both are laptops.

If you look at windows task manager on the "Services" tab while Media Center is running under Vista or Win 7, you should see a service called "Media Center 14 Service.exe" and it's status should be "Running". If this isn't running the transceiver won't work in Media Center.

The other thought I had was to go into Theater View options under the behavior section and checkmark the "Disable windows media center" option.

Hmm that service isn't showing up here at all?

I uninstalled and reinstalled MC, which caused the service to show up.
The wizard then started working!  :)

This works with standard install but not portable.
The service runs ok with portable, but the plugins do not show up under devices and options.

I had the same issue on Windows XP SP3.

Issue is I had it installed to a network drive - Z:\.  This is because my local C: drive is on a very slow SSD, so writing stuff there takes a while.  So I install apps on a network drive.

It appears that this broke the Media Center 14 Service, which wouldn't start - I tried to start it manually and it said it couldn't find the file.  I could see the path was pointing to Z:\.. so I figured it wouldnt start a service from a network path.

I uninstalled MC and re-installed to C:\, and now the Remote Wizard works.

I'm progressing here also.  I've done the opposite.  I uninstalled the C:\ copy of MC14 and reinstalled onto my portable drive as a regular install to K:\
This allowed me to have the services running and a working copy of the remote on my main system, while at the same time using the same library as my portable install, as now (Install Drive) is working.  This also means my portable install continues to work.  This means I needn't have purchased Intellimote, although it is a nifty little program.

have to keep both copies of Media Center up to date but other wise it's working well  :)

This has left me with one problem...
When the regular install performs an auto import it's reimporting files already in the library.
The files in the library have filenames starting with (Install Drive).

As a result everything is duplicating.
