No Media Center receiver connected [solved]
« on: October 05, 2009, 12:11:40 pm »

I'm following the destructions from here:
http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/Media_Center_Remote_Instructions

I click next in the wizard, and the message comes up:
You don't appear to have a Media Center receiver connected to your computer.  Please connect it and try again
and won't let me get any further.

The remote itself does appear to be working... except the green button?
I'm using build 79.

[edit by JimH -- uninstalling and reinstalling enabled the service to run]

What happened when you plugged in the transceiver (the box)?  Windows should recognize it.

Are you using XP?

My green button wouldn't work either, so I used learning to assign the 'toggle theater view' command to it.

The htpc is still running XP atm, and I put the "you don't appear..." message down to the fact that I skipped installing the driver the linked from the wiki.

So, are you on XP, and did you skip the driver installation?

I'm under Vista, I wasn't requested to install a driver and the box shows up as
"eHome Infrared Receiver (USBCIR)" in device manager

That's what you should see.  Try rebooting.  Try unplugging and plugging in again.  Try a different USB port.

No driver is required on Vista or Win7.

Hmm nope it's still not detecting it.
Restarted and tried different USB ports.
This is a Dell Dimension Machine Vista x64.  I can try it on an XPS laptop tomorrow.

Do you have another IR receiver?  Maybe built-in?  Try removing the ehome receiver from device manager to see if it will redetect our transceiver.

Under Theater View / Behavior, there is a setting that allows Microsoft's MC to be ignored.

In re-reading, it looks like other functions work, so the transceiver is working.

Correct it is working.  It can be used, it's just whatever logic the wizard is using to detect that it's there doesn't agree.

I'm fairly sure there's no other receiver.  I've checked through Device Manager incase.  I've tried removing the receiver both physically and in Device Manager but it's made no difference.

How does the MC detection mechanism work?  Does it look for a device with that name?

If I go to Devices and Options it doesn't show up in the drop down list.

MC doesn't detect it.  Windows does.  If it works with any of the buttons or if the transceiver blinks when you press buttons, the transceiver is recognized by Windows and working.

So it's only the green button that is a problem.  Correct?

Did you try the Windows MC setting I mentioned?

Also, Media Server needs to be running.  That's what starts MC.

Correct.

The Green Button plus the fact I have no control over the buttons, or the transmitting part of it. (I think?)

Did you try the Windows MC setting I mentioned?
I've tried it ticked and unticked.

Also, Media Server needs to be running.  That's what starts MC.

I didn't realise this, but it unfortunatley it  didn't seem to help.

If I go to commands and click add IR blaster command I get
No blasters were found on your system.  Did you forget to enable the MCE plugin?

That's a good start.  What happens if you click on the words that say: "Select input ..."?

This is a bug, of course.  Sorry.

No worries I'm patient!

If you click on the drop down you can see the drop down is empty.  Clicking on the text next to the drop down nothing happens.

I'm going to have to call it a night here it's gone midnight.  Till tomorrow!

Use the wizard once to do anything.  You can uncheck all but volume up, for example.  That should activate the MCE plug-in.

Good night.

Did you try deleting the "ehome receiver" from Device Manager?  Then unplug and plug back in to see if it will redetect.

Yes, Windows states "Device Driver Successfully installed".
MC continues to refuse to see it however.

Do you have an "ehome infrared receiver" in Device Manager under "Universal Serial Bus controllers"?  Did you delete it?

Yes and Yes.
I deleted it and it came back when I plugged the device back in.

And when you point the remote at the device and press a button on it, the transceiver box should blink red once.

The transceiver and the remote are then working.

If you go to Theater View, do the right and left arrows on the remote work?

So almost everything works, but MC doesn't see the device when you try to customize.  I'll see if John Thompson can help.

It looks like none of the remote control plugins are available to Media Center for some reason. Do you have rc_main.dll in your plugins directory (under the MC install directory)? If you run "regsvr32.exe" on rc_main.dll, does it say it succeeded? If it still doesn't work after that, maybe try deleting rc_main.dll and re-installing Media Center.
Let us know...

I started on the portable install, but realised yesterday it probably wasn't a good test ground, so am testing on non portable install now, but same result.

DLL is in the right place under C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 14\Plugins.
RegSvr32 completed successfully.  Just trying the reinstall...

For reference no plugins are showing up underneath remote in plugin manager.

I'll hang in there, it's already great to use.  Thanks for suggestions so far.
If in the end the transceiver/green button don't work then so be it.
I'm partly hanging in for debugging reasons for you guys.  I've got a feeling this might not be the only time you see this issue.
I will do some testing on other machines to see if I can find anything out/reproduce.

Are you still using build 79?
Look in this registry location and let me know what it contains. It should have the correct path to the rc_main.dll:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JRiver\Media Center 14\Plugins\RemoteControl

I'm away from home till tomorrow eve.  I did take a quick check before I left and that registry key did seem to look about right.
I will get a chance to test on my XPS laptop tomorrow night as will be bringing it home from work.

I'm starting to wonder if the Green Button only works on systems that have had Microsoft Media Center installed.

I have one XP machine that works and one that doesn't.  The one that does work is XP Media Center Edition.  The other is XP Home.  This latter one has only a single file in \Windows\eHome.

Also when I hit next under the remote options, it tells me

It is connected and functioning properly. I want to control my amp with it but can not get by this message. I have windows vista on a hp laptop that has its own remote window that I dont even have to hook up the additional usb devise. Could that be interfering even though when the usb sensor is plugged in it seems the stock one is disabled.

In the remote control options dialog, what do you see when you click the "Devices & Options" link and then view the "Selected input devices" drop down? On my system I have a "Microsoft MCE" device checked and also "Remote, gamepad, or other HID" checked.

I don't think it's a Vista 64 bit issue, since Matt is using that OS here and it works fine with various remote transceivers. KingStyles has two MCE type remote receiver devices and that may be the problem. I'll do testing here with two devices and see if I can duplicate the problem and fix it. Mr. Chriz has a different issue, none of the remote plugins are showing up in Media Center.

Mr. Chriz, what do you see when you click the "Devices & Options" link and then view the "Selected input devices" drop down? On my system and KingStyles' a "Microsoft MCE" device is checked and also "Remote, gamepad, or other HID".
Also, do you have two remote transceivers on your system like KingStyles?

Are both of you guys using one of our JRiver Media Center transceivers? If not, what are you using and how many IR emitter jacks are on the back of the units? You won't be able to do any blasting without at least one emitter jack.

Hang on... some progress here.
I've realised that on my main install now under devices and options the plugins are showing up!  :)
I think that might be a consequence of a restart or something since re-registering the DLL.

However the message remains the same on the wizard.
Mine is a JR Transceiver.  About to test it on a different machine.
