MJ8 eats ALL my ram during file import to Library.
« on: January 09, 2003, 07:42:39 am »

I recently finished ripping and encoding all my CDs and now have over 6,000 tracks.  When I clear the Library and import all these, my ram manager shows less and less free ram until it gets down to 1 MB free (started with 80% of 512 MB free).  I don't get any ram back until I shut down MJ.  After restarting MJ, the ram stays at a normal amount.  On a few occaisions the system has locked up before the import completed.

Can anything be done to fix this, other than getting more ram?  Has anyone else had this happen?  Someone with even more tracks?

W2K Pro, 2.4 GHz P4, 512 MB ram MJ 8.0.388

I thought it might help also to know, all the files being imported are .ogg and .m3u that list only .ogg files.

I'm having the same problem on another system; all memory is consumed while importing ogg files to an empty Library.  Has anyone else had this happen?  Is there a fix for it?

BUMP

I've had this happen on four different PCs, all running W2K.  Has not anyone else experienced this?  Or at least have a comment to make on this?

I don't have problem with importing OGG files, maybe the problem is the M3u files, make a test choose import only ogg's and the import only the m3u files and see the diference btw

I have the same problem with OGG files. I've imported 1900 files. MJ allocated 246MB and didn't release it.

I'm now using MJB 8.0.398 and I am still having the same problem.

I see from the replies in the thread announcing 8.0.398 that plas has also experienced this.

Anyone from JRiver, please respond and tell us what you know about this.

i see now that you posted this also that it is just a ram releasing problem.

i did not understand what it was when i see it in the other thread announcing 8.0.398 that plas said about these bugs.

but i have a solution to the trouble if you dont use this program already you might get it and see if it fixes the trouble  if so post back and tell us.

because i use the program with the computer i have  and i dont have any trouble with the ram and the mjb version i have yet.

go to http://www.analogx.com

and get the  maxmem program of his  it is a small ram cleaner.  you install it then put a shortcut icon in the start up folder so it starts when you  boot up.

it then keeps the ram clean out to the amout you configured it at.

if this fixes your troubles then i am glad because i then will get version 8.

so please post back with a yes or no for it fixing the ram issue.

I hope your not expecting this to be fixed in MJ8 if it is a problem.

MJ8 is old news, MC9 is where it is at.

I never had a problem with MJ8 and analyze

@ KingSparta: I don't see why not.  If it is a legitimate bug, it should be fixed. MJ8 is the current product; MC9 still has not been released.

The problem is not with analyze; it is with import.  If I clear my library and then import all my 6000+ ogg files, my system memory is reduced from 300+ MB free to 1 MB (as indicated by MemoryBoost Pro) until MJ8 is shut down.

[Rant]
Personally, I think it is premature to discontinue support for MJ8 just yet; that goes for JRiver and for third party developers too (no new Chart Finder for MJ8?).  MJ8 is the only official released version available.  I also have a slight problem with the selling of licenses for a product that is still in beta stage and hasn't even been released yet; but hey, Micro$oft has been doing it with every new version of Windows, so why not anyone else too?  I'd also like to see stopped the pushing of MC9 to everyone that has a problem with MJ8; MC9 isn't ready yet, and it's very difficult to get MJ8 working again after trying MC9.

I've installed AnalogX MaxMem, but it didn't fix the memory problem.

Before import:       245 MB free
After import without MaxMem:  0 MB free, 35 MB swap
After import with MaxMem:          23 MB free, 54 MB swap
After closing MediaJukebox:  263 MB free

See if you can isolate whether it is a file or file type that is causing the problem.

Import one folder at a time, or split your folders in half, import one half, then the other, then split again.

well i see it did clean out some not used files for you?
this program might help on the computer at work for your freezing trouble.  as i also had that trouble until i used this program.

what i found out was that  on my computers  mjb likes to have atleast 30 mb's free  when it is being used,  well not mjb  but my computer cpu  that way it had some room to open or run other programs with that needed to use a lot of ram to start up with.

as for this  importing thing i am still not sure it is not a ram issue.

but i have heard of alot of trouble with winXP Sp2  download causing a slow down of the fast xp computers  how ever you cant uninstall the sp2 because it is a security patch for some kernal in xp   and is needed.

so most are waiting for MS  to fix it they have admitted to the trouble and are working on it.

so i am thinking this might also be part of the trouble with mjb but i am not sure   jim H  would know more about that then me.

Import is very slow and MJ reads too many megabytes from the harddisk. Tags are usually not longer than 512B, but MJ reads 12KB from each file.
MJ also reads some information from the end of file. It is strange, because OGG tags are always at the beginning of a file.

Offset: 0 Length: 8192

This is output from FileMon. Only one file was imported. You can see that MJ read some parts of the file more than once. Maybe it doesn't free everything.
