AVI files crash MC14 [solved]
« on: October 07, 2009, 02:49:53 pm »

I can listen to music and watch MOV clips, but as soon as I try to play an AVI file, I get the fullscreen view in black (no video), try to resize it to Standard to see what's what, and then it crashes.

Have tried uninstalling, rebooting and installing with no luck, although not with the registry library cleaning options.

Try installing CCCP.  See our wiki (link above).

An AVI is a container format, so whatever is inside it it probably missing a filter that can play it.

Did that but it didn't help. It just seems to be AVI files. They play in Windows Media Player though.

Whatever is in the AVI has filters set in MC to something other than what WMP uses.

There are utilities available to learn what's in the AVI.

Try fiddling with filter settings for MPG (as a guess of what the AVI contains).

That's a pretty standard XviD AVI with MP3 audio.

Something is messed up in your filters.  Can you try to render the file using G-Spot and tell us what filters it is using?

Also, MC can generate a logfile.  Go to Help -> Logging and enable Output to Log File.  Then make sure that ALL Event Types are checked, and reset the log file.  Then try to play one of the AVIs that make MC crash.  Then go back into MC and open back up the Help -> Logging dialog, and click the "View" link next to the Previous Log item.  This should pop up the logfile in Notepad, and you can copy and paste it here too.

When you do that, be sure to enclose the logfile in the Code Tags on the forum, or it'll be impossible to read.  You can do this by selecting the text after you paste it in, and then click the # button in the Forum software's toolbar.

Hi again,
G-Spot shows this is being a problem when I run the file:

Code: [Select]
VFW I420 Intel IYUV codec vidc.i420 0x00200000 ** File Missing: msh263.drv
The MC log file exceeded the 12,000-character limit for messages, even when I tried breaking it in two.

What seems odd is that I can play this and other problem files in other players.

SOLVED

 ;D

I installed K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. As part of the installation process, it removed other codec packs, one of which I strongly suspect had a damaged codec/filter.

Thanks for the help!

That's great.  FYI... In the future if you ever need to post logs, we generally only need the last few-hundred lines (showing the crash and what preceded it), not the entire log.  I've been busy, but that was going to be my response.

Generally, the logs are most helpful to the developers.

I strongly suspected that it was a codec problem.  I'm glad you got it sorted!
