5.1 balance reset at every start
« on: October 29, 2009, 04:29:40 pm »

Hello,

I'm a newbee addict to Media Center and I have a problem : I use it at home on a system with 5.1 surround (where it plays, VERY nicely) but I have a very serious gripe: Each time I start MC (version 14.0.84) the sound repartition is resetted same level to all channels and I have to do the balance again wich is a real bore.
Anybody Knows what i'm doing wrong ? I have been playing with option all day, with no results.
Please help ! :-[
Thanks

Here's the topic on our Wiki:
http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/Surround_Sound

Maybe something there will help.  It sounds like the defaults may be set by Windows or your sound card.

More details about the equipment and how it's connected might help.

I haven't heard this one before, but maybe try unchecking the 'Optimize volume' box in Options > Startup.

You can also use DSP Studio to output 5.1 (analog or Dobly Digital) and let it do mixing.

Thanks for the link: I'll be sure to check that as soon as I'm in front of the machine.
As for the hardware, it's an integrated 5.1 on an Asus motherboard.

I only played with options in the playback section and it never occured to me to check the startup entry.

OK ! We are getting somewhere !  ;D
Thanks to Matt's suggestion (don't check optimize volume in the startup section), now the speaker balance stay the same between sessions of media center.

I still have to understand some minor thing though:
-why some videos when played reset the 5.1 balance distribution to the same setting on all speakers, but not always/all videos (still not sure)
-why in videos the sound only come from 2 speakers and is not simulated 5.1 like it is with music

But apart from that, Media Center is by far the best product I ever encountered !  ;D ;D ;D ;D
