hi, i have a perfectly tagged collection of opera music.
many of them are multi cd, tagged as "disc 1/x, 2/x, ..." plus tracknumber.

when adding such an album to playlist all other players (like foobar) play songs from 1/x to x/x.
mc14 sorts my album like this: first all tracknumbers 1, then all tracknumbers 2...

where can i tell mc14 to sort first from disc number and then from tracknumber?

MC has a tag called "disc".  Is it set?

If not, you could search for "disc1" and set it for all.

all files are flac.
they have a field called DISCNUMBER what is filled.

mc14 is using a field called disc#, thats what the editor shows.
but lists of songs do not show content

but i'm not shure, all taggers i'm using show different field names in gui.
dbpoweramp shows ID tag called disc (x/x)
foobar shows 2 fields (disc number/total discs)

seems there is no real standard
but i have no problems sorting of multi cd's in playlists in other players.

now i can definetly say that mc14 is not reading from discnumber tag of flac files.
i have checked with different editors, discnumber field is set.
flac information shows field fillt with value. but columns in playlist show no value.

i guess this is because mc14 defines in options/library and folders/manage library fields:

Name: Disc#
Display: Disc#

But Name should be "DISCNUMBER"

This field is not editable.

When the disc numbers are stored in the library sorting works correctly, but as you said, MC uses "Disc #" when it tags FLAC files. Discnumber is a different tag. Also MC doesn't use or store the "total number of discs" value.

A possible solution would be to use some other tagger for mass copying the field values to a new "Disc #" field. Foobar or Mp3tag should be able to do that easily. I have both styles tagged in my FLAC files.

You could do that in MC by first creating a field named Discnumber, but the stored "total number of discs" values might cause a problem when they are included in the field value (using the x/y style).

Regarding functional "total number of" fields (discs and tracks), I requested them some time ago when file tagging in general was under an overhaul, but I was quite alone with my request.

Thansks Alex B, the trick of adding 'DISC #' works. Foobar2000 do the job nicely, but not Mp3tag.

oh thx - and i tried so hard with mp3tag...

in the past i had many problems on different custom installations with players software automatically sorting playlists.
opera fans want to listen from 1 to z, not interested how many cd's etc.

so i decided to use mp3tag 'tracknumber assistant' and renumbered my complete collection
- a lot of work but ease of use now!

this example shows disastrous situation of tagging music.
industrie should establish an open database (gracenote) for public use and care for good data.
or what about standards in tag fields?
