Google Nexus One phone
« on: January 09, 2010, 10:43:36 am »

Google released their Nexus One phone this week.  I ordered one and moved my SIM card from my older G1.  I've got it with me at CES and so far I like it.  It's still a little awkward, but I haven't found anything too troubling yet.

I've got it on an AT&T account, so I don't have a 3G connection.  It's using AT&T's Edge network.  But it feels a lot faster than my old G1 (both phones are made by HTC, by the way).

Phone -- works.  No problems.  Easier to dial than the G1.  Touch screen works fine.

Camera -- works.  The camera in the older G1 was bad.  This one is good.  It's a 5 megapixel camera with good video.  It works OK in dim light.  Sample pictures from CES

GPS -- quick enough to use.  Integration with gmail is nice.  You can click on an address in gmail and quickly find it on the map.

MP3 player -- works but I haven't tested it much.

Video player  -- nice quality images.  Very slick.

Keyboard -- It's a touch screen and if you turn the device on its side, it's big enough to be usable.

Overall -- I like it.  MC doesn't yet sync to it, but maybe next week we'll get it going.

Jim, I think you should try out the Sony Xperia X10.

-- only because I'm thinking of getting one, and it'd be good to know it works with MC ahead of time ;)

Jim, what about the battery?
Not looking good so far.  It lasts a couple of days under moderately active use.

Today I drained it in one day.  I took a lot of photos, a couple of movies and used GPS a lot.

I would consider that good!  My Droid often doesn't last the day, especially if I'm using wifi.  With GPS enabled, forget about it!

Update on the battery.  It seems to last 4 or 5 days in normal use, without GPS, wireless, or bluetooth.

You don't use your smartphones the way most people use their smartphones.

I'm using a HTC Hero, and I only very rarely touch the bluetooth and GPS.
On the internet constantly though, and gets used as a MP3 player too.
Far too many apps too (F1, football scores, that sort of thing)

~2 days or so out of the battery.

Btw, if I understand correctly, unlike Nokia and RIM, it doesn't handle DRM'ed stuff, right?

At least in the states you have some alternatives and plenty of DRM free services but here in Canada we only have few subscription (DRM based) services... And I personally like the subscription model...
