missing tag information in windows explorer
« on: February 04, 2010, 01:13:01 pm »

All CD's ripped with MC14 since about begin of December 2009 are missing tag information in windows explorer
this means when I open the folder with the mp3 files, information such as artist, album, etc. is not displayed.
when copied to my Zen Creative, all these albums are displayed as unknown.
do you have any idea what might cause this malfunction.

thanks,

What build are you using?

Is MC set to store tags in the file?

what do you mean by "what build are you using"?
which parameter do I need to switch on to store tags in the file?
the parameter "manage library fields" "store in file tags" is flagged on

Under Help/About, you will see something like 14.0.100 for a version.

Jim, it appears to be broken.

As a test, I just ripped a CD. The resulting MP3 files don't contain ID3 tags at all.

I have tagging enabled in Options > General and also in the field specific settings. The MP3 decoder plugin is set to always write ID3 v1 and v2. MP3 encoding is set to VBR Normal.

I attached a sreenshot of my other options. I have audio analysis and cover art downloading disabled. (I have not tested this, but these two might trigger tagging and hide the problem.)

We're having troubles reproducing this.

We've tried multiple machines, and have tried using the exact same settings as AlexB.

I was going to suggest "Options > General > Update tags when file info changes" since this could explain it, but Alex said that's not it for him.

Any other clues?

Thanks.

I ripped another CD and now tagging works fine. I reripped the first CD and also it worked.

I don't undestand this. Before I posted my above reply I ripped the CD three times and tried some different settings. Tagging didn't work. I verified that with MP3tag and a hexeditor. I have Avira Antivir running, but it has never caused tagging problems.

Now I can't reproduce the problem even if I try to change settings.   ?

I actually had tagging disabled in Options > General, but I enabled it before I did my first tests. I restarted MC and double checked all settings after seeing the first tagless files, but that didn't help.

Could a setting change sometimes "not stick" or somehow get applied only later?

Alex,
Thanks for the testing.  I'm not sure what is going on.  You're on XP, as I recall.  The only thing I can imagine is that something (virus checker?) is causing delayed writes of the registry.  If YADB was slow, maybe the CD ripping could begin before the results were available, but I think you'd see that.

Thanks again.

Tagging is also disabled if you're connected to a Library Server, have opened the library in read-only mode, or are in Party Mode.  If you run multiple instances or share a library on a network, your library might be opened read-only.  If you click 'never warn me again', you might not know this was happening.

Changes to the user setting in Options > General should take effect immediately.

I see some remark about sharing.
I had my music directories imported in Media player to make them available on my AV Receiver which is connected to the network.

I'm going to bed now it's midnight here

hear/read from you tomorrow

I am glad it works now.

If the file info is available inside MC you can apply tags to your old files by selecting the files and running the "Update Tags (from library)" tool.

It is still a mystery why it didn't work for me when I first tested the behavior. I had the "Update tags... option enabled.

By the way, it is enabled by default, so you must have turned it off.
