Using an X10 remote to control MC14
« on: February 18, 2010, 07:48:30 pm »

Hi all,

I have an old Nvidia X10 Remote (UR88A) with receiver (CM21A). I'm running MC14 under Vista and although the USB reciever is recognised by the OS, MC14 doesn't want to know when I try and run the Remote Control Wizard. Is there a way to get this remote to function inside MC14?

Cheers.

Maybe the X-10 MP3 Remote plug-in will help:

I used it for a long time using a remote with the same receiver you have.

Just don't forget to train the remote while configuring the plug-in.

Unfortunately I have tried this plug in and I couldn't get it to work. It say that is had "failed to start" in Remote Options of MC14.

Maybe this doesn't work under Vista?

Have you tried girder? I believe that has an X10 plugin doesn't it?

I never used Girder, but have heard about it many times. However, just looked it up and it cost around $50 for the standard version, $110 dollars for the pro version with X10 support!!! Unless I have the wrong site.

I just bumped into this doing upgrade to W7.
You actually need download/install drivers for the receiver from X10. The one provided by Windows is something different - it's listed under USB controllers.
The one from X10 makes an entry under Human Interface Devices.
Woo-hoo - I don't need girder no more!
Here's the link:
ftp://ftp.x10.com/pub/applications/drivers/x10drivers_6432_239.exe
Hope this works for you too.

Hey Max,

Cheers for the heads up on this. I downloaded the drivers form X10 and this has sort of worked. Certainly certain buttons on the remote now do some things, but not everything work as it should.

And still, the X10MP3 plug-in to MC14 "Fails to Start"!

I can't believe that girder is over $100 to get X10 functionality. Is there anything else out there that might be able to remap the keys on the remote in conjunction with the X10 drivers you suggest above?

I don't think you even need a plugin for it.
Select "Remote, keyboard, gamepad or other HID" in Devices & Options...
Don't even look at girder - it's overpriced and not actively developed (I bought it some years ago).
Take a look at http://www.byremote.com.au/HIP/ if you need some added functionality.
However, for simple remote controlling MC14 by itself will work just fine

Cheers again mac.

I set the remote to "Remote, Keyboard game pad or other HID device" in MC14 and the plug-in says it active, however when you click on "Next", I get a message saying that no Media centre remote is connected.

I will have a look at HIP when I'm able.

When you say "worked", do you have the same Nvidia X10 remote? Do you mean that you can change things in MC14 (in the 'Remote' options pages), or do you mean that simply some of the buttons on the remote already happen to work with MC14 control?

I haven't gone through everything on the remote as yet, but the very basic functionality seems to be there. It appears as the button on the lower half of the remote work (i.e. arrow keys, OK, Play stop etc - the ones that I would really be interested in), but some of the buttons on the top half of the remote don't (such as mouse control, application buttons etc).
