Im sure that this has already been mentioned on the forum at some point.
Whilst being able to look up on wikipedia is kind of helpful, what would be really good
would be for MC to be able to use the meta data, backdrops etc like the Windows Media Center plugin "media browser" does
Then you can download all the info you want from various sources using "mediascout" etc and all would be cool

Agree; also the MC team could look at making some change so that MC 15 can read the meta data on some of the older CD's

Dear Jim and Forum members

Now I have a little more time I have articulated my question a little better...

Version 15 of the Media Player does not consistently read all the track and album info from the ‘new’ CD correctly when I ask it to rip. So for example this evening I am trying to rip in a four box set of classical music and it will do one disc from the set and then not the other. The error message I get is this

“Media player has detected a new CD in drive E: but can’t get the correct volume information. Please try reinserting”

With a few CD’s it even reads the album cover art or I find it on the internet

Would you consider this a bug or is there a setting I need to change?

The CD probably has no information on it other than the audio.

The album, artist, and track names come from our database (YADB).  So does the cover art.

When you don't see anything, you can enter information and it will populate our database.

The poinnt I need your help with is to understand whether it’s an issue with your software or is it my (slightly scratched) CD’s that are at fault when trying to rip?  I want to understand the inconsistent results I am getting.

Their online database is deeper than ours. 

You should find 90% of the data in ours.  If you're not, what type of music are you listening to?

MC15 uses also freedb in addition to JRiver's own YADB (freedb is a new feature in MC15). YADB + freedb should provide pretty good coverage.

Are we sure that his problem IS actually that the lookup is failing?  Do you get the "volume information/reinsert" message when the lookup fails?

This sounds more like a disc read failure message.  I don't rip CDs enough to remember.

yes, that is what happens with some CD's.

I read one of Matt's posts and have added the flac plugin and this evening (UK time) I have also changed the encoder to FLAC.
Doing this seems to have improved the consistancy of the metadata appearing when I prepare to rip a CD.

JimH - I was trying to rip a box set of classical music..CD's where made in Europe. Very little tech info on the box.

Alex - where can i find the new "freedb to JRiver's own YADB" in? is it under Tools?

It's automatic.  Make sure your version of MC is recent.  15.0.150 is on this board.

Finding the meta data for a CD is a matter of a good internet database.

The problem with classical music is that it is not pop music.
Indeed it is not popular so the changes to find the CD in a Internet database like YADB or FreeDB are lower compared with pop music.
The reason WMP finds it is because they use AMG, a paid database and very good (and consistent ) in classical music.
I’m afraid tagging is one of the very few weak spots of MC.
YADB is to small and FreeDB to inconsistent to tag classical music properly.
I’m a MC fan boy so much to my chagrin I must admit that both the database (AMG) and the functionality of WMP (manual lookup) in case of tagging are superior to MC.
