MC & Win7 UAC
« on: April 18, 2010, 10:39:43 am »

I'm upgrading all PCs here to Win7, and running under "limited" (standard) accounts.

I've installed MC15 under the User account and it works fine but each time I change an Option I'm prompted by UAC for an Admin account and password.  That, in itself, is also not a problem but I was wondering if this is normal behavior?  Other programs, when changing user options, don't result in UAC intervention under the same user accounts.  Just curious in case I'm doing something wrong.  Thx.

No answer to this question?
This problem is still here and since I'm in the same configuration, I'd really like to understand why privilege elevation is needed there

It's not normal.

What version of MC are you using?

It's not normal.

What version of MC are you using?

15.0.142

It do'nt happen on every options though,

For example, it just happened with the following sequence of actions;
tools->options->audio->check "plays file from memory"

UAC prompt appears
Pressed "cancel"
Result=> MC crash

Launched MC again, the option is now checked and I'm now able to check/uncheck without UAC prompt?

Just happend again

Unchecking box near "DLNA Server"

I've pressed the "details" buttons of the UAC prompt
the command line involved was:
<MC15 install dir>\PackageInstaller.exe /RegDLL ShellExtensions

Turn off all DLNA, just to test.

What you're seeing is not normal.

I've just learned to ignore this since I never got a response to my original question, but it's still there for me too, on 4 different machines: on some options, but not all.

I never venture into DLNA so it's not that for me.  You might want to set up a limited account and test this, J River.

Other programs, when changing user options, don't result in UAC intervention under the same user accounts.  Just curious in case I'm doing something wrong.  Thx.

Some options are machine level options, and as such, require UAC elevation to change.

Disabling WMC, changing shell extensions, or changing file associations are the options I can think of off the top of my head that require UAC elevation.  There may be others.

This is normal, and nothing to worry about.

How can you explain that the *same* option sometimes require UAC elevation and sometimes not?
I've just tried to recheck "plays file from memory" and I do not get UAC elevation for now.

And, regarding the option "changing file association", it should not raise UAC as it normally only involves keys located under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes" which is user specific.

(I know all this is not a really big issue but I like to understand what' happening on my computer under the hoods)
