duplicate entries in library
« on: June 23, 2010, 08:44:09 am »

I recently moved my library from one HD to another. I did this by copying the files in Windows and then doing a "Rename, Move, Copy" in MC with the "Update database to point to a new location" option. After that was complete I turned on Auto Import on the new library location to pickup new files I eventually put there. This all seemed to work fine, except that I've found I now have duplicates of some tracks in my library.

I've examined the tracks as thoroughly as I can and they seem to be identical, including the full path. Is there anyway to easily find and remove these dupes from my library?

Could you start a new database and just import again?

Check the file path and name of the duplicate files.

You could use this smartlist to find files with duplicate filenames:
-[Filename]=[] ~dup=[Filename]

It should be empty, since a new database record should never get created for files with the same filename as an existing record.

Let us know what the smartlist shows, because that will tell whether there's some subtle difference in the filenames or if they're really identical.

Thanks.

Thanks for the formula, it worked an revealied 3190 entries; a mixture of music and photos.

If I then add the modifier "Remove Duplicates of [Filename]" it pairs the list down to 1595, exactly 1/2. From this list I could remove them all from my library, but my concern is that won't MC then remember these are removed entries and not auto import them in the future? That shouldn't be an issue, but if I modify any of these items in an external program at some point I'd prefer that MC automatically pick that up.

Is there a way to clear MC's list of items that were deleted from the library? Any other ideas?

Back! Finally found it. To list the deleted library files, use this in the search: ~d=a

A quote from http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=54348 :

Auto-Import should be able to remove old file data if also the disk files are gone. You could remove the files from the library, move the disk files to a temporary location that is outside MC's reach and run the Auto-Import feature with all cleaning options enabled. After that you can move the files back and import them as new library entries.

Anoher, a relatively easy solution would be import the files from a different basefolder so that MC would not have old data for them.

A more complex solution would be to actually remove them from the hidden deleted files database section. Here are some old threads that explain it:

I know I've seen that search item before but after trying it again, I cannot determine what tag item tells me the item has been deleted. I tried a search through all the forums for "~d=a" and "deleted" but that didn't work. I couldn't come up with any searches in the wiki to show me the list of search items like that. Any suggestions?

I had the same issue at first, but then I read through the referenced threads a bit more carefully. The ~d=a mean to show everything in ALL databases. When you also need is to then exclude things from the "normal" databases (Main, CD, and Explorer). Unfortunately, it appears there isn't a direct way to do that, but what you can do is create playlists of those 3 normal databases and exclude those playlists. That leaves you with just the deleted database.

I did all that and it seemed to work. I then deleted my duplicate entries and that also seemed to work. Finally I ran an auto-import and i found nothing (which is good).

Thanks all!
