'Slurring/Stuttering' Audio w/ MC15
« on: July 15, 2010, 12:26:03 pm »

2 Channel Audio System Components:
 - Flac files
 - JRiver Media Center 15
 - Mac Mini running Parallels w/ Windows 7
     - Processor: 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
     - 2G memory
 - Ayer DX5 Universal Player
 - Ayer preamp, mono blocks, Wilson speakers

The MAC mini is running Windows w/ JRMC15 which has 154 Gigs of flac files.
The MAC mini is outputting audio via USB type A to USB type B into the Ayer DX5
for DAC utilization... Then out to the Preamp and so on.

All config. was fairly painless and the music sounded great... BUT THEN IT HAPPENED (almost immediately)...

The problem i am experiencing is glitching audio. This doesnt happen consistently. The audio seems to glitch more frequently when i move the mouse but even after leaving the computer alone for multiple minutes the glitching will still arise. The DSP settings are in default. I did turn the cross fade down to .2sec.

One thing to mention, i played streaming audio from multiple websites and could not reproduce the glitching audio i was experiencing with JRiver MC15

Here are two possible sources of help:

An intermittent problem like this is often a driver problem.  Try disabling network interfaces, for example.

What version of Windows?  Are you using WASAPI or DirectSound, WAV Out, etc.  (in MC Options for Audio.)

May sound ridiculous, but are you using a wireless N card?

Dry disabling it and see what happens...

I was using one a while back and got slurring of sound as well...

in general, unless you have perfect conditions, 802.11anything is problematic for streaming media.

Add any 2.4gz devices within say, 100 feet, and 802.11 networks will 'stutter' in terms of packet loss and massive retry/error correction.

Data can handle the stuttering.  Streaming media cannot.

Microwave ovens are 2.4gz devices.......  So are many cordless phones, all bluetooth devices, radar detectors (emit 2.4gz as a side issue), electronic/computerized gas station pumps, fast food restaurant cordless headsets, many wireless home water and electric power meters, etc, etc, etc.

I suspect that for every user that claims to have perfect media streaming on their 802.11 network there are many many more who can't get it to work reliably.

Streaming yes, but this sounds like it's simply playing from 1 PC.  ;)
