Theater View is sluggish: Is my gfx card too slow?
« on: August 09, 2010, 07:02:51 am »

Hi,

I have a nice new Atom D510 motherboard by Asus. It has an integrated Intel 3150 graphics card. It runs Windows 7, and it works well enough in 2D.

When I switch to theater view and scroll down, new artists pop up very slowly.

I tried the same thing on an old Athlon 4000+ with an ATI X1300 graphics card. Much snappier. They are both DirectX 9.

Oh, btw, I load the files over windows networking from a file server.

Please advice! Should I get a better gfx card for the player?

Probably the graphics card, but why not try moving the ATI over to the Atom, then you'll be able to see for yourself :-)

Theater View has two options you can try changing.  Frame Rate and Drawing Quality.

Can't move the graphics card, because it is a PCIe card, and the Atom mobo only has a PCI connector.

I've lowered the drawing quality. I'll try the frame rate next!

OK, finally, I've tried the frame rate. Well, it does work "faster", but now the image stutters. I set it to 20 fps.

Still, when I play FLAC 24/96 at the same time, the UI is even more sluggish/choppy.

So, the graphics card is probably not up for it. It competes with the CPU for memory bandwidth, too, which is a single DDR2 stick.

CPU is still low, so probably it's not the bottleneck.
