Problems with videos
« on: August 08, 2010, 04:45:01 am »

Hello there.

I use the Video:Files view with dropdown panes with following settings.

The first thing I discovered is when I'm adding categories to the view the last category (here director) shows the items of the first one (name) in the dropdown. I have to restart MC or remove the just added column to solve this.

The second thing is that I can't create thumbnails of videos with playback method set to 'external program'. When I switch to 'automatic' and the click 'rebuild thumbnail' then it works.

A last thing is an explanation why I use VLC for video playback. I have trouble with dual audio video files. MC either won't play any sound or both audio tracks at once and I can't switch between them. Maybe I just don't know how to set things up.

I hope you can help me

On the first question, I'm not sure.  It could be a bug.

On the second, MC can't provide thumbnails unless it's used to play the file.

The quotes around [Filename] don't look right.  I'd expect that to result in [Filename] and not the name of the file.

I guess I have to live with that right now.

The quotes around the filename are correct otherwise it won't work at all.

Any suggestions for the third part? Should I try to install a different codec? I did not yet concentrate on that but maybe I should give it a try?

What file container are your videos with dual audio in?  mkv, mp4, avi?

Depending on the file type, the solution may be different.  All three types can be handled by Haali Media Splitter, though someone had mentioned that it may not be advisable to use Haali with avi files.  Make sure you have Haali Media Splitter installed.  It can either be installed separately, or as part of a codec pack such as CCCP.  It will let you select which audio stream to play.  Inside MC, right-click in the video display window and select "Stream Selection".

Thanks so far. I guess I just have to get into this video-codec thing.
I played a little bit around and installed CCCP. Got everything working so far.

When trying to activate .avi in the Haali settings it says it's not recommenced to do this but when I use Haali inside MC for .avi playback it works.

Haali does fine for avi in my experience, despite the warnings.
