DLNA: Samsung BD-C5500. Works but not everything. Any users here?
« on: September 24, 2010, 04:33:52 pm »

Hello,
I gave DLNA a try on my Samsung BD-C5500.
MC15.0.113
Seems to be working, but:
-- Video - doesn't show external subtitles. No encoding. When encoding is enabled it doesn't play anything.
-- Audio - doesn't show Artist Name. It sorts albums by artist name but when playing it shows "No Singer".
UPDATE: I'll check it when I'm back home but it might be it reads Album Artist field (which is empty in most of my titles) instead of Artist.

Is there a way to see the subtitles (srt format)?
How to make it read the artist name?
My settings - DLNA, DLNAExtra, Playstation 3 compatible, Present subtitle resource.
Audio:
  - Convert unsupported
  - Encoder: High bandwidth MP3
Images:
  - Support image content
  - No conversion
Video:
  - Support video content
  - No conversion

Subtitle support has been improved recently.  I'm not sure whether it will help you but it's worth trying.

Build 118 is out here http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=59765.0

Installed the latest build 122
Subtitles still do not work.

If anyone got them working, could you please share the settings?
Thanks!

As for the Artist, it's possible the player could be asking for something other than "Artist". As you say, perhaps album artist. I'm pretty sure we aren't providing that field though. It would be a simple change however. It'd be nice to get a dump to see what it's looking for.

As for the subs, the subs should show up if there is a .srt file with the same name as the video in the same folder as the video. Is that the case for your media?

-- yes. srt format. same name and folder. they do work in MC but don't get passed through DLNA.

Nope...

-- it doesn't read Album Artist field either. Shows No Singer. Sorts everything right -- Artist/Album -- when an Album is selected all titles are listed but have "No Singer" label

-- still no luck with the subtitles

any ideas?
thanks!

Same problem reported on tversity forum (no solution)

Music now plays fine, but I see one minor issue so far - song titles and album names appear fine, but artist names all show as "no singer". Anyone know a fix for this?

The artist problem may have to wait for a firmware update.
If you have .srts working with something else a wireshark capture would be nice.
This message has the procedure to get one:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=57668.msg402391#msg402391
It refers to serviio but you can use tversity if you have it working with subs.
All I really need is a view with a couple of files that have subs in it.

Installed Serviio - both things work just fine with it:
-- Artists shown correctly
-- Subs shown correctly
I'll play with wireshark later.
Thanks!

I have a similar samsung unit.  Haven't had time to test yet, but initially the artist field is missing and it won't play audio at all.  I use flac and have it set to convert to mp3, but the unit complains of an unplayable format.

Bob:
ouch.. the resulting wireshark file size is over 80Mb. Is this normal?

You could reset the logs, then do whatever causes the problem, then send the log.  It should be smaller.

Jim -
i was referring to wireshark dump, not MC.
80Mb was just for 1-2 minutes of logging..

It doesn't need to include much if any actual playing, just the connection and navigating to the movie files on the renderer.
Also, I changed the instructions a bit so that the capture filter is applied while capturing packets instead of after.

Do you have an mp3 that you can try to play without conversion? Is the conversion set to "always convert" or "convert when necessary"

Looked at your latest capture, thanks for doing it!
It seems that you should see the subs if you turn off "present subtitle..." and turn on "present caption..." in DLNA advanced options. Could you try with a mpeg2/ac3 file instead of a AVI ?

I didn't see a browse to an audio file so I couldn't check the artist problem. I have a guess on that one but it'd be better if I could see a capture with it working...

Bob - thank for looking into this!
-- I'll check how it works with "present subtitle..." option off. Last time I tried I had both options "on".
-- I don't think I have any mpeg2/ac3 files. I've been converting everything to avi only for a long time.
-- I'll do another wireshark capture for the audio.

Thanks!

Ok, forgetting about flac for now... testing with mp3's only.
Settings:
Audio
Conversion: tested 2 values with same results:  convert unsupported formats and always convert
Encoder:  tested 2 values with same results: mp3 low bandwidth and mp3 high bandwidth
  Advanced
    Volume leveling unchecked
    Sample rate: same as source
Under ADVANCED, the following are checked:
DLNA

I connected and browsed down through artists and albums and selected a single album of mp3 files.
At this point I started the packet capture.
Clicked on a song to play it.
Got message on the player indicating format not playable.
Stopped capture.
Here's the capture file
ip address ending with .10 is the MC computer.
ip address ending with .11 is the NAS that the mp3 files are stored on.
MC accesses files from the NAS like this: \\death_star\mp3\genre\artist\album\song.mp3
ip address ending with .53 is the Samsung bluray player.
I'm running tonight's build of MC.
Let me know if you need anything else.  I'm available almost all day tomorrow.

Well, I sorta know that.
I was asked to try mpeg2/ac3 file instead of AVI. I know that DVD VOB's are mpeg2.
AVI normally are either divx or xvid which are mpeg4 (?).

Bob: why mpeg2/ac3? - it doesn't have anything to do with subs or does it?

Try to enable "Playstation 3 compatible" under Advanced - this fixed mp3 playback for me (I believe).
I also have DLNAExtra enabled.

That did it.  I can play mp3's now.  Thanks for the pointer.
Two issues remain:
1) The artist field still says "no singer".
2) When browsing to a FLAC album, I can click through audio > artists > select an artist > select an album > as soon as I click on the album and it should be displaying the songs, I get an error displayed "Request cannot be completed.  Media play will be returned to the main screen."
Here's the capture attempting to browse flac
Setting was set to convert unsupported formats.

For video, the baseline format that everything plays is mpeg2/ac3. Then most everything else plays mp4/mp4 of some kind or another (like h264/aac).

It'd be nice to know if it was PS3 or DLNAExtra. I can't really see PS3 doing anything to help. DLNAExtra probably should always be set for this player.

Sorry, I phrased it badly.
If conversion is enabled Video wouldn't play - the player tries to connect to something, showing the progress rotating thingy (forever).

If video conversion is enabled, no AUDIO plays??

I am confused here...
What would you like me to test? What would be an example of mpeg2/ac3?
Most of my files are xvid with ac3.

That's very weird, the PS3 switch should only affect video.

Sorry, I phrased it badly.
If conversion is enabled Video wouldn't play - the player tries to connect to something, showing the progress rotating thingy (forever).

Ok, I get it now. We're trying to handle too many issues per topic.
Let's wait on video conversion until we finish with non-conversion video issues.

So right now, I think we MAY have the AUDIO singer issue figured out (Check your PM's for a test build).
An outstanding AUDIO issue is that plain old mp3's won't play without the PS3 switch set. I really need to verify that since I can't see how that should make any difference.
The other outstanding AUDIO issue is that flacs conversion to mp3's don't seem to work, right?

The outstanding video issue is that subs using the .srt flag don't work. VIDEO conversion should be turned OFF.
Please try this with:
Present Caption Resources turned ON and Present Subtitle Resources turned OFF
then reverse that and try it with:
Present Caption Resources turned OFF and Present Subtitle Resources turned ON

I was hoping we could just do the video testing with a test file consisting of mpeg2/ac3 since that seems to be what anything will play.
Here's one you can use for testing:
http://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/testmedia/stuartlittle-preview-mpeg2-ac3.mpg
and
http://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/testmedia/stuartlittle-preview-mpeg2-ac3.srt

Bob,
Did some testing and got some strange but positive results.
First, a little history. I am new to DLNA. I bought this DLNA-enabled Samsung BD-C5500 a few months ago. That's the only DLNA device I have.
Tried DLNA with mp3 - didn't work. Started clicking around in advanced options and "Playstation 3" made mp3 play. And I distinctly remember that it did play flac/ape files (with encoding enabled of course). I didn't really use it as a DLNA player - just checked how it worked. I came back to trying it again just a couple of weeks ago specifically to see if subs would work.

Now. You mentioned that PS3 option shouldn't affect mp3 playback. I came home this evening and:

-- disabled PS3 option (build 128). mp3 still played. (with "No Singer" problem).
-- tried flac. no go. but I could see that MC was serving something (there was network activity).

Installed build 129
-- mp3 played. "No Singer" problem still there.
-- tried flac. no go. again MC was serving just the player couldn't get it.

Installed the test build 128-1
-- mp3 played. "No Singer" problem still there.
-- tried flac. no go. again MC was serving - just the player couldn't get it.

Went back to build 128 to start testing the mpeg2/ac3 (Stuart Little trailer with subs) file.
Went from 128 to 128-1 to 129. With all possible combinations of Caption and Subtitle Resources. -- no subs...

HOWEVER! Both 128-1 and 129 started to show Artist ("Singer") info and play flacs!
I have no idea why it didn't work just 30 min before that (all setting stayed the same, except for subtitle related).
Go figure...
I guess, the audio part is fine now (I'll do some more testing). Video - the subs are still not there.
Thanks!

Wow, thanks a lot for the testing!
What I've been noticing happening with some DLNA devices here is that they get into some sort of scrambled state where things don't work quite right and then they need to be power cycled. They don't recover by themselves all the time so if you see weird things happening, it's probably time for a power cycle.

I'll keep at the subs, I really don't see why they are not showing up now.

Bob -
Somehow I got an idea that MC now has a native support for subs. But it still needs VSFilter, right?
Can it be VSFilter's fault that the subs do not get served via DLNA? Maybe I have it configured wrong? Local MC15 does show the subs.

It can be confusing because when the subs are in the same directory as the video file (the normal place to put them) when direct show (or vlc or whatever) gets at a video file to play it, the subs will get pulled in. The same thing holds true when the file is being transcoded.

HOWEVER, what we want is that the subs are served as a separate file to the DLNA renderer and the renderer inserts the subs into the picture as the video is played. That allows us to keep all of the seeking/fast forward/fast rewind ability of playing a file that's not being transcoded. Now, most DLNA renderers don't actually support separate .srt files. For those devices, you can only do subs with transcoding. Can you check and see if you have transcoding OFF in serviio?? Also it's crucial that the subs are in the same folder as the video with exactly the same name (except for the extension).

Your device IS asking for the subs in one of the many formats and we are returning the .srt file to 5500 but it appears to not like it for some reason I haven't figured out yet.

It IS possible that it really doesn't support separate subs even though it's asking for them since the 5500 appears to be using pretty generic upnp code.

Yes, transcoding is OFF in serviio.
Yes, the subs are in the same folder and with the same name (otherwise MC wouldn't show them either, right?)

Bob,
Just FYI. MC 15.0.141 plus new Samsung FW (came out today) - still no subs... : (
Everything else seems to be working fine.
Thanks for helping,
