Database will be read-only!
« on: November 03, 2010, 11:56:38 am »

TIA for any help!

I get the subject message when opening MC15 on my server PC after changing various tags from my client (HTPC).  Both PCs running Win7 and MC15.142.

How can I get my server PC back to normal editing?

I hope this is an easy question.  :-[  If more info is needed, please let me know.

Thanks.  :)

You must enable authentication now on the server.  The client can now delete files on the server, so we require authentication if you're going to sync back.

If you're getting the Read-Only library error message, it sounds like you are accessing the Library directly with both PCs, and not using the Library Server.

Do me a favor, go to File -> Library -> Load Library -> Library Manager.  Then in the dialog that appears, tell us what it says under Location for the library with the yellow arrow next to it.  We need to know this for BOTH PCs that you use MC on.

Thanks, Jim and glynor, for the quick replies!  :)

Jim, I had already enabled authentication on the server.  In fact, all of the changes I made from the client HTPC were in fact made to the Library and files on the server PC.  :D

glynor, I think I am using Library Server (the Media Server icon is present on Task Bar).  However, when I look in Media Libraries I find:

Server PC: Media Libraries is empty so, no yellow arrows!

Client HTPC: Default  C:\Users\gac\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 15\Library.

Thanks for your help!  :-[

I don't know how it happened, but that's a problem.

The server (or any other Media Center) needs a valid library.  So you need to create a library on the server, and maybe then restore from a library backup.

If you're able to reproduce losing your library like that, please provide step-by-step instructions for us to try to reproduce the problem.

Thanks.

Yeah, that's messed up.  Also...

Client HTPC: Default  C:\Users\gac\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 15\Library.

This means that the HTPC is using a LOCAL library, not a network one.  If it were a network one, it would look like an IP address or network location in the Library Manager.  So, something is all messed up.

Can you actually open up and run MC on the Server machine?  Maybe try manually closing the Library Server icon in the Tray (right click and quit) and then open MC.  Do you get any errors then?  Does the Library Manager still show as blank?

Are you using Roaming User Profiles in Windows in any way?  I'm wondering if that C:\Users\gac\AppData\Roaming folder actually points to a network location somehow, and if the two libraries are actually pointing at the same place.

OK, I shut down Media Server and, now when I open MC, the "database read-only" message does not come up.

Also, I did a Library backup and then did a Library Restore from that backup and now Media Library on the server PC does have an entry -- Default: same path as the HTPC.

I tried navigating with Explorer to that Library path on the server PC and, I could not find it!  ?

The HTPC has no media files on it -- all of the 62,000 files are on the server PC.  I will go look on the HTPC to see if the Library is on it for some reason!

Thanks for sticking with me on this! :-[

Windows hides the application data folder by default.

There's an option in Explorer to show those files.  You can also type the path, and then it will let you see into hidden folders.

Yes, Matt, thanks!  After a little searching on Interact, I found that the path is per standard.

So, is it normal operations for the Media Server to have to be shutdown after an editing/syncing session from the client, in order to edit the library on the Server?  I will do some further testing of this.

Thanks to everyone for the quick help!  :D

I don't think you're actually using the Library Server....

No.  You should be able to edit on the server any time.

 :)

OK, please excuse me if my terminology is not correct but, I have have done too much upgrading in too little time!  I installed 2 new computers running Win7HP (I was using XP) and I installed MC15 on both of them (I had been using MC11)!  :-[

So I am on a very steep learning (beating head against wall) curve!  ;D

Here's what I just did as a test(?):

1.  Shutdown Media Server on my server PC.

2.  Made a change (track#) on a file in MC15 on server PC.

3.  Checked the file on hard drive and verified that the tag was indeed changed.

4.  Restarted Media Server on server PC.

5.  Went to the HTPC and started MC15.  The same file in the loaded library was not changed as per (2) above.

6.  "Connected to library" in MC15 on HTPC.

7.  The file was then updated to the changed value (track#).

8.  Went back to the server PC and closed MC15.  Restarted MC15 and did not get the "database read-only" dialog.

9.  Crossed my fingers that all is well now.

Does this make any sense?   :)

That all sounds normal.

It may have been as simple as the HTPC did not connect to the server automatically when started.  Once you manually connected, everything fell into place.

Thanks Matt.

Also, thanks for the tip to show hidden files!  That helped to ease my worried mind.  :)
