MC 15 Freezes With New Windows 7 Installation
« on: December 05, 2010, 07:54:57 am »

I’m a longtime user of MJ and MC and currently have a license for MC 11, which ran fine for me on Win XP. Yesterday I upgraded my system to Windows 7. MC 11 would not run, so I decided to upgrade to MC 15.

However-

The MC 15 trial version worked well for a few minutes, then started hanging up on me. First it happened while trying to import media. I have about 220 GB of  music on an external drive. Partway through the import it froze so badly that I could not even kill the MC process with the task manager- had to cold start the system.

Now MC 15 has frozen again and all I did was uncheck some file associations but at least after waiting several minutes Windows shut it down.

Running Win 7 Home Premium on a homebuilt system with Intel E6750 Dual Core 2.66GHz  CPU, 4 GB RAM, M-AUDIO Revolution 5.1 sound card and ASUS 512 Mb EN9600GT TOP video card. Have latest sound and video drivers already installed.

Windows Error Message reads:

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:   AppHangB1
  Application Name:   Media Center 15.exe
  Application Version:   15.0.159.0
  Application Timestamp:   4ced974c

Any help would be much appreciated.

Windows sometimes reports an error when MC is just very busy.

Try just waiting.

Try turning auto import off.  Import a few directories at a time.

The external drive may really slow things down.

MC has logging under "Help".   You may be able to watch the log while it's running.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Right now I cannot even get the program running again to try and turn off auto import- I get an immediate error message when I try.

The MC process is showing in task manager, but I can't close it out.

I'll wait a while to see if it finally shuts down; if not I guess I'll have to power off again. :(

Next step I guess is disconnect the external drive from the system, restart the program, disable auto import if it is on, and then go from there.

Just to follow up: I copied a few dozen MP3s to one of my hard drives, then removed the external drive from the system. Uninstalled and reinstalled MC 15, then imported the media from the HD location.

I've had music playing for about 2 hours without a problem, so I'm guessing that the issue was with the external drive. Guess I'll just have to install an additional internal HD for music. I can think of worse ways to spend a winter afternoon.

Thanks for the help.

What is the drive?  Make and model?

Is your antivirus software checking each file on the drive when it's opened?

Western Digital "My Book" 320 gigabyte, and you know what, Avast is set to "scan documents when opening." Interesting!

Just as a followup, after a week of playing a subset of my collection from an internal drive, things still seem to be working well. I've ordered a nice new 640 GB drive which I'll install this weekend, then gradually migrate the full collection inside the tower. The old external drive can continue to serve as backup storage. Smiles all around- thanks again!
