MJ 8 won't start!
« on: June 12, 2002, 07:40:51 pm »

Upgrade MJ 8 from 7, program will not start, gets stuck at splash screen.  Have reinstalled seveeral times.  WinXP Home, K6-2 550, ATI RagePro 128 AGP  w/32mb Ram, 256mb Ram.

Install seems to go fine, but when I click on the MJ icon the splash screen comes up and just stays there. Task Manager shows MJ as running as a process, but it's just the splash screen and I have to choose "end process" to close it.

I have Windows XP Pro, and had the same problem.  Try right clicking on the start icon or the MJ8 .exe application.  Look for 'Run as ...' -- If it pops up a window that says 'which user account do you want to use ....' select Administrator, and type in your password if there is one.  It should run then.  I am not sure Home edition is the same as Pro, so this may not work.  If it does work, and you can start MJ8, then you need to uninstall MJ8 and then re-install with yourself as the user.

Chris,

Thanks for the response.  Tried your suggestion but it didn't solve the problem.  Still looking for a solution.

Did you install the full version (9MB) for each user?

I see the same thing.  Upgrade to 8 from 7, only get a splash screen and it pegs my CPU at 100%.  I can kill the process easily in Task Manager, but I can't run MJ 8.  I'm running as an Administrator, Windows XP Pro.  The latest released version of 7 worked great.  Any ideas?

Did you do the upgrade (from within MJ) or the full download from the downloads page?

Please copy your system info from MJ Help and paste it here.

Try reinstalling your video driver.

Hi, Jim -- I can't get to the MJ Help screen, so here is some relevant info about this machine.  I just downloaded nVidia's newly released drivers from 6/11/2002, so I'll try those and post back.  I am running ver 28.32, will be going to ver 29.42.  I got a piece of email saying that MJ 8 was released, and since it's my media app of choice, I followed the links and downloaded the new version.  I ran the full install from the downloaded file and chose to uninstall my previous registered version.

If I were you, I would try to lower the display resolution in where you are at this precise time frame.

The new video drivers didn't work.  Still hangs at the splash screen, and the CPU in Task Manager stays at 100%.  When I kill Media Jukebox.exe, everything returns to normal.  Tomorrow I'll uninstall 8, go back to 6, reload my license, then upgrade to 7 and wait until the issue is understood unless there's a resolution before then.

Thanks, Turbo, but I went from 1280x1024 32-bit to 1024x768 16-bit, same issue, still hangs.

Try one more thing. Go to C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch and delete everything you see inside that folder(Prefetch), reboot and try it again.

Hey All,

Finally got it working. All I did was restart a bunch of times, and I would wait a few minutes at the splash screen. Then I would go to task manager and end the process.  Finally after about 8 or 9 times MJ opened but crashed before I could click on anything.  After starting and crashing about 3 times I was finally able to get into the configuration and do some settings.  The first thing I did was disable the splash screen (sheepishly grinning).  MJ 8 seems to be working fine for now.  I really can't offer any advice because I really didn't do anything other than what I'm posting here.

Good luck, it's great when it works.

Geez, I wish I could reproduce this. (tried every upgrade combination I could think of)

It sounds like some setting that MJ 7 has is tripping MJ 8 up.  I'm not sure what it is though.  Uninstall MJ 8 completely. (erase settings when it asks)  Then, reboot, and reinstall.  Does that fix it?

Thanks for your patience.  Hopefully we'll get this solved soon...

Take care.

For what it's worth, I had the splash screen disabled in version 7.  By default it's on in version 8, maybe there's some sort of disconnect there.  Is there a reg key that'll disable the splash screen I can alter?

Thanks,

I completely uninstalled 8.0, reinstalled it, and it works.  I pointed it to my backup library, and I have all my music.  Here's the output from Help | System Info if it may help.

I have experienced the same issue over the course of the last two weeks i have been downloading and trying to install with the same result, freeze at the splash screen.  I had version 7.2 and initially tried just downloading and opening the downloaded file (not from inside MJ 7).  Then I tried uninstalling version 7 and leaving the registry entries, then finally completely uninstalling 7 and all with the same effect, freeze at the splash.  I am running Win ME, Norton, etc.  Please help, at least I am not the only one encountering this issue

You can try setting this registry key manually to 0.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Music Exchange\1.0\Media Jukebox\Properties

We can't duplicate this problem, but it's possible that it may have to do with the screen position or the screen resolution.

We know the problem is real.  If you can provide any more information it would be appreciated.
