ok so those were the personal logs that dont error out.

I've made new test account, unzipped library, then backed up that library. then relogged into My user account uninstalled jriver... in jrivers uninstaller i chose to remove all settings libraries, and reg entries and my new question is... After uninstalling with jrivers uninstaller, My Uninstaller program came up with these left over reg entries. See Pics...

I chose to remove these leftovers. but wondering if there is anywhere else jrivers uninstaller might have left behind i should check before i reinstall and do next test of restoring TESTS accounts library?
Thanks again

well i've not heard back. I just reinstalled it, followed your instructions Alex. and no go.. Same error.

I think i'm going to take your guys advice. and reformat.

I'm thinking before i reformat if it would behoove me to buy another pc\server that can be dedicated as a server\jriver server. that way it will solve many of my problems. dvd's not playing on client machines. work machine will be seperate. and jriver will always be up.

Suggestions on a pc\server to get? I got an email yesterday that Bestbuy is having a private bestbuy for business sale on sunday. so maybe there is something there that would work? i do already have a rack so maybe something from newegg\tiger direct would be a better choice so it fits in my rack horizontal.
i have a total of 20 drives. 1 - 16 bay DAS, and a 4 bay hot swap unit. and would need an OS Drive.
My Setup As Of Now the das is plugged into my main machine. These links and info are a QUOTE from the guy I bought the DAS from(so I’m not sure how legit they are)

Quote
DAS = The system is called a MV5116, designed by Ciprico, now owned by One Stop systems: http://www.onestopsystems.com/MV51085116.html#SlideFrame_1

PSU is Emac Zippy brand.  They make the best server/enterprise level PSU's in the market. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=hg2-5400v&aq=f&oq=&aqi=

The card is a Marvel based Software RAID, RAIDcore RC5452-016 card.  Made by Ciprico, but now owned by DotHill http://crc.dothill.com/display/2/articleDirect/index.asp?aid=2266&r=0.1448633

The case is a universal 3U Chassis made by AIC: http://www.aicipc.com/

These are my notes that he told me I need to find in order to hook up the DAS to a server/pc
I NEED... pcie x 8 or 16 connection in server/pc
storage array - connection is DAS
SAS sata controller raid.

windows home server? unraid?
can i run jriver and jriver server on windows home server and unraid?
is it ok to put thumbnails on the server?
pc\server strong enough to run 2 das units? that way in the future i could buy another DAS when i have funds and i could set it up to do automatic backups.
Anything specific to look out for?
Would any of you be willing to throw up some links of pc's\servers that would work for me?
My budget is pretty low now due to the economy, and holidays.
Thanks For Any Help!
And also thanks alot for the on going work\troubleshooting you've all given me on my issue, it's much appreciated!

If you decide to build it yourself, you can't go wrong following TR's System Guide:
http://techreport.com/articles.x/19868

(There actually should be a new "Holiday" System guide coming out in a few days here, though.)

You'll probably want to re-use your existing SAS RAID Card from the current box.  Those are expensive and there's no reason to buy a new one if you already have one.  I'm surprised to hear that the SAS RAID card is a PCIe x16 card!  What card is it specifically?

If you really need two x16 PCIe slots (one for the video card and one for the SAS card), you'll want to look at that when you buy the motherboard.  Most dual PCIe 16x slot boards actually only provide x8 lanes per slot (the slots are physically x16 slots, but they are internally only supplied with x8 lanes of bandwidth).  However, you probably don't actually need x16 lanes of bandwidth...

That gives it a TON of throughput, but I'd be shocked if the card could actually push that much data.  The data rate for PCIe is 250MB/s per lane.  Now, that rate is bi-directional, so the one-way limit is 1/2 that (125 MB/s).  Still, a PCIe 1.0 x16 slot supports 2 GB/s of unidirectional bandwidth (4 GB/s both ways).  Video cards with super-high-end GPUs accessing extremely high-speed GDDR5 RAM have trouble filling that bus (and modern systems use PCIe 2.0 which doubles the bandwidth available per-lane).  Even though SAS is super-fast, I can't imagine your RAID actually pushing 4 GB/s in any kind of consistent fashion.  Even if it could, you couldn't actually use that much bandwidth... The CPU wouldn't be able to keep up!

Glynor i'm lost on hardware side of things. And i appreciate you helping me.

i took pics of the main pc...
as far as the info inside the DAS i don't think we will need that? i think we just need to make sure that the card i have plugged into main pc will fit into new pc, and if possible to get another DAS in the future to plug into it JUST for backup purposes.

Please let me know if there is anything else i can upload or tell you. for i'm not sure what's all needed?
I will be away from pc for about 2 hours for business meeting, but will be back after that.

the first pics is the actual inside and back of case so you can see the connector and the card. the second pic is of the card itself and it is inserted into the 16 slot.
As far as name of card all info in on the sticker i couldnt find any other info, and looking at the link i sent ya i guess the site is down :(

That's a PCIe 4x card.  You can use them in bigger slots (all PCIe slots are capable of using "smaller" cards, so long as they "fit").  Actual physical 4x slots are pretty rare.  Usually they give you 1 or 2 physical 16x slots (for the graphics cards) and a handful of 1x slots.

You should be good to go.  Just look for a motherboard with two PCIe 16x slots.  The configuration of "lanes" doesn't matter (pretty much any PCIe 16x slot will supply at least 4x lanes of bandwidth when in use, even if they're only wired to provide "partial" lanes in a dual configuration).  I just checked, and literally ALL of them in that system guide I linked at TR include 2 physical 16x slots and would work with that card physically.  If you aren't going to use a "real" graphics card, and plan to use onboard video, then even that doesn't matter (you could use the one 16x slot designated for the graphics card for your SAS card instead), though even then I'd splurge a little and get one that has two slots so that you can upgrade to a discreet graphics card later on if you choose.  Plus, the boards with only one slot are typically very cheap and low-end.

You will, however, need to find Windows 7 drivers for the SAS card, unless Windows has them built-in.  The stuff inside the DAS doesn't matter, just like you suspected.

You can, of course, buy a commodity computer from someone like Dell if you want.  I prefer to build my own because you can get exactly what you need.  Of course, if you do that, you give up the support offered by the vendor and you have to rely on the individual component makers for support (and be able to do some self-diagnosis if you have trouble).

PS. That's a pretty nice and high-end board you have there.

Glynor would you be willing to help me find my system? i can paypal you for your time?
Maybe we could chat via yahoo, msn or paltalk messenger? so we don't fill up the jriver forum?
As i've mentioned earlier in this forum, i do have a list of features i'd like this server to be able to do, and i could email\send that list to you. and by doing so we\i could get moving on this upgrade.

Let me know if you can spare some time please, and i can put things on hold and we can go from there.
Thanks

well that i got lucky on, they guy i bought the DAS from gave me XP and Win 7 drivers so i'm good to go with that. just curious if those drivers will work with Unraid, or windows home server.

yeah, i was thinking about going there jim also to buy the stuff. but i already know there not familiar with DAS type units. ive driven in there and asked them to help me out with my type of system and they couldnt give me any info. i felt as if it were like a best buy, where they basically were only knowledgeable with consumer type products.
Do you know someone there personally that may be able to help him with my type of setup?
Thanks

I just reinstalled it, followed your instructions Alex. and no go.. Same error.

It would have been interesting to find out why the other backup file restores fine and the other causes a crash. I can't understand that. The restore process should be quite straightforward, especially when the settings are not restored. Basicly the files are extracted from the zip file to the library location and in addition MC does a few other things (e.g. cleans the thumbnail cache). I kind of hoped that the developers would have listed the parts of the restore process that interact with external processes and components and could cause a problem with something that is not quite right outside MC.

You could also have tested "closing/running the services and startup programs" further. For instance: run only 50% of them > did it crash? > if yes, close half of the 50% (leaving 25% running) and try again _or_ if it did not crash > start 25% of the closed items > did it crash?... and so on. Eventually you may find out which individual service or program causes the problem.

Restoring the library by manually unzipping the files, as Alex described, should be a workaround.

Disabling background tools like auto-import or DLNA, or letting the program run for 5 minutes before restoring might also make a difference.

We haven't been able to reproduce the crash on our side, but will try on a few other machines.  We may add more logging to a coming build, if this problem persists.

Thanks.

Well matt i know you guys are local. bout 20 minutes from me. you guys wanna use my system as a guinnie pig i'm more then happy to let ya do it for the sake of jriver and the users(i can in 20 minutes move my RIP folders to another pc, and you guys can do your testing. plus OS is imaged, so anything happens big deal. ) I AM\WILL be moving forward though and removing jriver from this machine, and getting pc\server hopefully in the next week, if i can find something that will fit my needs... Anyway offer is there if you guys wanna see whats going on.

Yea Alex that's what i did, I disabled EVERYTHING not microsoft related in startup items and Services and then did all the steps you suggested with test account, then uninstall on main user, then reinstall then restore.

Correct! and that i tried as well, i did alex's steps twice. meaning uninstalled jirver went to test grabbed that backup library, went back to my account, reinstalled, and then COPIED the zipped files from library back up of test into My user accounts library, then opened jriver and everything was there, And then for another test, i tried once zipped restore was there, was to restore again and she errored on me.

Disabling background tools like auto-import or DLNA,

Auto Import I Never have On, And I Just Checked And It Is Unticked. DLNA Is On and I've not tested that Yet (Now that You Mention it that makes Sense, there is many times when i goto living room to turn on theater and jriver will be playing  amovie or music. And I KNOW I pressed stop and went back to home screen. I'm wondering if maybe my IRMON is sending a command to jriver via my logitech remote when i switch activities. If thats the case, Maybe She won't restore because there is actually files playing on the theater client? I'll run that test tonight.

or letting the program run for 5 minutes before restoring might also make a difference.

That's not the case with me. System has been running for long periods of time, after reboots, after errors and she still crashes

Regarding buying/building a new server PC, a "server" is not needed for MC and its server features. A standard desktop PC is fine.

The media services are not especially demanding when only a few files at most are served simultaneously. Only the needed storage space is in the "enterprise server" class if the media library contains lots of video stuff.

Budget: about $450 + OS (I'd actually recommend XP for its simplicity and reliability*) + assembly & configuration if you need help with that.

I actually quickly added suitable components to an Amazon cart, but it does not seem to have a "mail to a friend" option so that I could post it here in a compact form. I'll try to reproduce the list at newegg (they have the mail option).

* Glynor may disagree, but IMHO if there is no hardware that needs Windows 7 or software that runs better on a 64-bit OS, 32-bit XP Pro is fine. ;)

well i want  a server anyway. so i figured i could kill all my birds by getting a pc\server to hook up to my daz, and be able to serve files, and also have jrivers server on it as well.

And IF POSSIBLE not sure if it is.. but be able to hook up an additional DAZ do it in the future for my backups to auto sync. My concern for that is 16+16 +4 = 36 drives.. Windows system only will do 26. So the way i understand it, it would have to be a server type system, so i can combine the drives(As i mentioned earlier i dont want a raid of any type i want 1 to 1 backups, by doing so i'm stuck with many drive letters.... and if that works then i need to worry about power... will a pc\server LOW BUCK be able to handle all those drives?

I actually quickly added suitable components to an Amazon cart, but it does not seem to have a "mail to a friend" option so that I could post it here in a compact form. I'll try to reproduce the list at newegg (they have the mail option).
I'd love to see it, read up on it. Thank You.

The motherboard has an integrated Radeon HD 4250 graphics chip so you would have two PCIe x16 slots free. It supports SATA revision 3.0 (6 Gbit/s) and it has lots of connectors: USB3, USB2, E-SATA, Firewire, HDMI, DVI, D-SUB, 1000MB Ethernet, SPDIF, 7.1 analog, etc. I have been using its predecessor (almost the same, but with Radeon HD 4200 and no USB3 & SATA r.3.0) for almost a year now and it has been an excellent mobo.

One thing i did notice is i need a horizontal case, it takes less room in my rack., will that mobo fit in any horizontal type case?
Also do you think it could handle 2 das units or am i pushing my luck?

thanks

DLNA Is On and I've not tested that Yet (Now that You Mention it that makes Sense, there is many times when i goto living room to turn on theater and jriver will be playing  amovie or music. And I KNOW I pressed stop and went back to home screen. I'm wondering if maybe my IRMON is sending a command to jriver via my logitech remote when i switch activities. If thats the case, Maybe She won't restore because there is actually files playing on the theater client? I'll run that test tonight.

ok had some time to test this...

I disabled DLNA on server\main machine and also on HTPC\Other Clients and still errors on me.

If the hardware system presents the 16 drives as separate standard drives I think you must have some kind of software "RAID" for combining the drives.

For instance, WHS has an option to combine various drives so that they show up as one, but I don't know what would happen if one of the drives fails and you must replace it + restore data from a backup archive. (I have never used WHS.)

Would it still be able to show the separate drives and their individual contents and be able to fix the "combined file system" after the drive has been replaced? In addition, Microsoft has announced that the feature will be removed from the next version.

On XP Pro you have always been able to mount drives as folders instead of assigning drive letters. AFAIK, it should work fine for any number of drives. Here are screenshots of five drives that are mounted as folders:

Naturally you would have a big number of "drive folders", but there is no need to see them inside MC.

In my example the "_Drives" root folder is shared so that the numbered drive folders are under a single network share.

Here is an inexpensive rackmount case that is designed for standard consumer PC hardware:

Maxtop has also several other nice rackmount cases. Here is a review of one of them:

Without any personal experience it is difficult to say, but why would it be different from running only one? I assume you don't have tens or hundreds of clients trying to simultaneously access the media files. If you are using the second unit only for backing up stuff it should not be more demanding than any copy operation between two standard hard drives.

I have read more about WHS. The Drive Extender feature seems to be quite clever and probably could do what you want.

Though I am still not fully convinced of its fault tolerance.

Personally I would power the backup drives up only when I do an incremental backup session with a program like SyncBackPro. I would initially store the new additions to an internal local drive and move them to the DAS Array just before running a backup session. I could back up the internal drive to another drive automatically and frequently. I'd prefer to have two back up copies of all data, but I can understand that backing up 16-20 drives twice may not be very practical. *

In addition, as I said, the Drive Extender feature may not be included in the next version WHS:

http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/b/windowshomeserver/archive/2010/11/23/windows-home-server-code-name-vail-update.aspx

* Fortunately I can store my media files on three 1TB drives. For backups I have six 1TB bulk drives and an eSATA dock. I keep the bulk drives in two "shoe boxes" (three in each). One of the boxes is always stored in another building. I switch the boxes weekly or so. My next planned upgrade is to replace some of the drives with 2TB versions.

Alex Thanks for the link :)

i went to microcenter today to purchase these parts. and they were stumped on one of my questions...

If my DAS has power supply units in it. then i don't need to worry about how big of a power supply unit the server pc will have correct?

they seem to think i will need a psu to carry 16 drives, plus the other 16 Bay dAS. and said they wouldnt have  apsu strong enough?

The drive array has its own PSU. The server PC will only need to provide power to the PCIe connector card (or cards) and that amount is negligible.

BTW, originally I wanted to recommend the quite famous Corsair 400CX PSU (product code: CMPSU-400CX), but apparently it has been discontinued. It was a great basic PSU. The Corsair 430CX PSU is listed as a replacement, but after reading some reviews/comments it seems to be of a different design and might not have exactly the same overall high quality. Also, the warranty period has been dropped from three to two years. If you can still find the 400CX model it would probably be better. Of course there are a lot of brands and models and for this purpose any basic modern PSU from a well-known manufacturer is fine.

EDIT

Corsair 450VX is from the better VX series (with a 5-year manufacturer's warranty). Here is a bargain price: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3287208&CatId=1078

Thansk for tiger direct link. saved it, been doing some thinking, think one of these would work?
http://cgi.ebay.com/3U-Server-Intel-P4-3-6-Ghz-2GB-16x-Bay-RAID-/400002387374?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d22000dae

Be able to plug my other 16 bay unit into it? and use this one as the server\throw server on it?
then i'd have backup solution right away as well, instead of having to pull my backups out of safe and back them up manually with my docking station.

Whats your opinion?

It contains old technology. Pentium 4, old memory technology, old and limited connectors on the motherboard, etc.

If you are going to run MC on the server PC the included Intel server mobo would be quite limited. In addition, did you notice that it needs an additional controller card for running 16 drives? I don't know if it would still have room for you existing card.

I would prefer a separate, modern PC that can also be also used as a powerful HTPC (with or without the drive arrays*). It would be a more versatile solution.

* You may want to consider a PC case that can be used in the vertical and horizontal position:

http://www.motherboards.org/reviews/hardware/1890_2.html  (edit: fixed this link)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119195

-- This case would be usable on a shelf in your rack. It would be easy to start using it as stand-alone PC in case you want to change to a different server in the future.

Sorry that I've been MIA.  I contracted an evil cold over the weekend, and I've been doing the sleep thing (or trying anyway).

It seems like Alex is getting you sorted out, but if you still need me, give me a shout next week.

Hi Alex, Glynor, been away and busy with other things and ready to jump into this endeavor.

I think i found the case i want to use... http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImage=11-219-021-S01&SCList=11-219-021-S01%2c11-219-021-S02%2c11-219-021-S03%2c11-219-021-S04%2c11-219-021-S05%2c11-219-021-S06%2c11-219-021-S07%2c11-219-021-S08&S7ImageFlag=2&Item=N82E16811219021&Depa=0&WaterMark=1&Description=NORCO%20RPC-4020%204U%20Rackmount%20Server%20Case

Is it possible to get mobo, psu, RAM,  for this case and one HDD to use as server os. and in future just buy the controller cards?
Also do you think it will be powerful enough to attach my other NAS to it?
if so.. could you help me shop for parts for this case?
goal now - use this case, get OS\server HDD,  plug in my old NAS into it and have a server

Future Goal - get controller cards for the 20 hotswaps, plug those into same mobo we originally buy, and also be able to plug in my other NAS allowing for backups.

Thanks for any advice, info.
Will await your feedbacks

I suppose the case would work fine. Your other NAS would not increase the power consumption more than what is needed for the controller cards. However, be aware that the case is quite noisy with its standard fans (that can be improved though). Here is a long thread about it at the AVS Forum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1119818
... and another one: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=202201
