Installing to a separate PC using an external hd
« on: March 14, 2011, 04:27:44 pm »

Hello:
Is it possible to transfer installation to a different PC? The MC purchase and download would be initiated by my laptop. However, music will be played exclusivily on a separate PC and external HD. If so, please advise step-by-step procedure.
Thanks,

You will need to install MC on both PCs.

Purchase MC by using the laptop instance. Immediately after the purchase you will receive a confirmation email with an attached license key file. You can use the key file for registering the other MC instance.

Hi Alex:
Thanks. What I don't understand is how to transfer to the HD. I tried it using the trial version. Only the empty folder transfers.
Thanks.

What do you mean by "transfer to the HD"? What do you do when "only the empty folder transfers"?

Yes, none of this makes any sense.  Can you describe in a lot more detail exactly what you're trying to accomplish.  Don't worry so much about how you want to do it, we can figure that part out, just explain what result you want to achieve in the end.

OK. I intend to play MC on a laptop which does not have internet capability. Thus, I would have to download MC on a different laptop and then transfer MC via USB Sandisk. In attempting this using trial version, I get a message "Media Center was not installed correctly for the current user. Please reinstall Media Center"
Thanks

Are you copying the INSTALLER file over, or are you trying to use the internet-connected machine to install MC to the external disk and then move that disk to the disconnected computer?

Option #1 will work fine (though you'll also need to copy over your registration file and restore that way, if you buy it in the end).
Option #2 will not work no matter what you do (okay, maybe in portable mode, but that's probably too complex and flaky for this situation).

I'm using option #1, copying the installation folder to the USB Sandisk, then re-installing the other laptop. I hope the registered version with the activation key will not have the problem in the trial version.

You are not supposed to copy the program folder of the already installed Media Center instance.

Download the MediaCenter150174.exe installer file to a local hard drive and then copy it to your other PC. You can use your "USB Sandisk" for copying the file.

Install the program on your other PC by actually running the installer file on it.

http://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/MediaCenter150174.exe   (right-click the link and select the option to save the linked file instead of running it directly)

Yeah, sounds like you are actually trying option #2 which will not work right.  It sounds that way because you said "installation folder".  There is no folder.  Just a single EXE file, as explained by Alex above.

For any program in Windows that uses an Install Wizard, you can usually NEVER move the folder once it is installed and have it work (even just from one place to another on the same machine).  That's because applications in Windows often need to install components outside of their "home folder" (the System32 folder and often your individual home user folder) and they create a bunch of registry settings that they need.

That's a difference between Windows and Mac OSX.  Mac Apps typically install everything in one place, and you can often move the package later without issues (though not always, Adobe and Microsoft apps don't work that way on OSX for example).

Once you get it installed and working on the non-internet connected laptop, you'll need to copy the JMD registration file (emailed to you when you register the copy that CAN get online) over to the offline laptop and double-click it.

Great! It's up and running. However, on my non-internet (Win XP) WASAPI is not shown in Autdio Output. The same installer on my main laptop (Win Vista) WASAPI is there.

WASAPI is a feature of Windows Vista/7.  It is not available for Windows XP.  This has nothing to do with MC or JRiver in any way.  It just wasn't added until Vista (and didn't really even work right until SP1).
