Crashes on startup
« on: March 29, 2011, 07:10:34 am »

These happen every sigle time.  I can't get it not to crash at this point.

The first is on every close.  ie.. file=>exit.  It just hangs then gives me the white screen.  I have to end the task in task manager.

Second is every time I run the auto scan under import.  It just hangs and gives me the white screen.  I have to kill the take in task manager.  The funny thing is it add all new files so it does what it's suppose to do, you just can't tell by the hangs and white screens.

Any ideas?

What version are you using?  Did you try the latest from the top of this board?

Any Apple files?

With version .58 I'll get into the program and then within 30 seconds. it says Windows has detected an error with this program and is trying to find a solution.   Then it shuts down.

With version .55 I can get in and play music but when I try to run the auto scan it crashes

I have an on going bug.  I'm getting constant crashes with everything above .55 - .55 works great. However, everything above it ie..  .56  .58  .60 crashes with 30 seconds after launch.  I have go back to .55 to listen to any music.  I have a Dell laptop i5 inspiron w/Windows 7

I read the wiki site and I also reinstalled my license.  This is only happing with versions above .55

Did you try this?

Turn off autoimport.

MC has logging (under Help).  After a crash, take a look at the Previous log.  Near the bottom, you should see "crash".

Hi Jim,

Yes - I turned it to automatic.  No change.  Yes .55 works but still with these two crashes.

I have two .60 logs saved as .txt files.  How can I attached them to this thread?

I would say 55 is also not working.

What is unusual about your system, if anything?

In my signature, there is a thread called "Stability".

Where should I e-mail the logs to?

Should I also try to switch between IE and Chromium under Options / Tree and View?

Read the log from the bottom up to see if you can see anything.

Yes, try a different browser.

What else changed at about the same time?

Virus checker?

The bug I found for my system is the Media Import:   None of the imports work for me ie..  Import a single folder, Auto Import, and Run auto import now.  All crashes the program when ran.  I found this out when I disabled the auto import function and ran each import option one by one.

It's good you've found this.

Now, maybe you can find out why.  It's probably one of these:

1.  Some type of file is being opened with a DirectShow filter that doesn't work right.

or

2.  Some software, like a virus checker, is getting in the way when MC tries to read.

or

3.  There is a problem with hardware or drivers that shows up when it is pushed hard.

So, try this first.  Turn off import of AIFF files.  Just to see if that is the problem.  Try importing only MP3, for example.

OK - so here is a little more info.

1.     DirectShow?  I only use this laptop for music.  Is DirectShow just for video or video and music?  Is this something that J. river installs?  I would not have installed it if not.

2.     This laptop is pretty much barebones.  I will take off all software that's not needed.  Virus checker?  What Virus software is recommended? I don't even have one installed.

3.     Where is the import AIFF files located so I can turn it off?

Choose Import, then click on Audio.  It will open.  Then uncheck all but MP3 (for example).

Jim,

In .63  It's still crashes on auto import.  However, I have found found something else.  I un-checked "Update for external changes" now it seems to work fine.  Now it analyzing the data, which it never did because of the crashes, so I will let you know what happens.

What is "update for external changes"  what does it do, what is it used for, do I need it?  Basic end user questions - I guess.
