A Couple of Media Network Issues
« on: April 10, 2011, 10:54:29 pm »

1. I have a smartlist set to randomly choose an album with certain parameters. When connecting to MC via library server this works just fine. This also used to work fine when connecting via our Roku Sounbridge, but with MC 16 the same albums are chosen each time. Here is the smartlist:

-[Genre]=[Book],[Children's],[Christmas],[Classical],[Comedy],[Old Time Radio],[Opera],[Tango],[Podcast],[Sound Clip] [Media Type]=[Audio] ~a ~limit=1,-1,[album] ~sort=[Album],[Track #]

2. With MC 15 I am pretty sure I used to be able to rip a CD on MC to a network share when connected to the Library Server and have it show up in the served library. This does not seem to be possible with MC 16 (I get an error saying ripping is not available when not using a local library), but I may be missing something (or misremembering). Is there a way to do this?

Regarding your first question

How is the Roku box connecting to MC?

I have found that WebRemote and DLNA does not "refresh" the smart list and hence I get the same tracks each time.
This is true in MC15

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=63987.0

And I would guess much older versions as well as I noticed the same problem back in 2007 and asked John Gateley about it and there was some explaination on the wiki

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=38169.0

Smartlists were one of the really nice features of MC, however I've been unable to really use them as my MC server is pretty much exclusivley accessed via DLNA (WDTV and Denon AVR) or controlled via WebRemote for the various other zones hanging of my 2008 R2 Server.

Smartlists Not Refreshing on DLNA Servers
« Reply #10 on: June 14, 2011, 11:01:13 pm »

1. Re Smartlists

Thanks for the helpful response, but I believe this confirms that Smartlists in MC 16 are not working according to spec.

The relevant portion of the Wiki entry reads:

Quote
To make UPnP devices work well with random smartlists, the UPnP server keeps track of which collections have been queried recently. If a collection is far enough away to mean that the user has browsed to a different portion of the tree, then the next time the smartlist is visited a new order will be returned. Far enough means at least the grandparent of the smartlist, or a nephew or an aunt. Merely browsing to the parent and back is not enough, nor a sibling.

But with MC16 any navigation, no matter where you go in the tree fails to refresh the smartlist.

Can this be addressed?

2. Re Ripping

The original query was never addressed: "With MC 15 I am pretty sure I used to be able to rip a CD on MC to a network share when connected to the Library Server and have it show up in the served library. This does not seem to be possible with MC 16 (I get an error saying ripping is not available when not using a local library), but I may be missing something (or misremembering). Is there a way to do this?"

Ripping on a library server client was never intentionally supported.

Someday we would like to offer the ability for a client to be able to create and upload files.
