Great Software, a few bugs (tagging, ripping)
« on: June 01, 2002, 10:22:30 am »

I love this software, however, the following limitations/problems prevent me from replacing my current media software (Musicmatch):

1) When burning a CD, it always thinks my blank CD capacity is 650MB, although the blank CDs are 700MB.  (I have an iomega external Zip CD)

2) When updating multiple tags it crashes.

3) I have an Intel Pocket Concert player.  Currently, there is no support for this, so I have to continue to maintain the library in Musicmatch, in order to be able to download songs to the player.

Without a doubt, Media Jukebox is a much more user friendly and robust software than Musicmatch.  I'm hoping that these issues will ultimately be resolved, so I can use Media Jukebox as my primary media player.

Mp3's or other format?

are you playing them at the time?

I do not see this problem with Mp3's

The media is not playing at the time, and all the media in my library are mp3s.

For example, the following is the scenario that I just did to test:

- launched the software
- right clicked on an artist with 7 songs
- selected File Properties...
- Supplied a new Genre
- Clicked Save
- The error box appears
- Click OK
- The program quits

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, it is happening here.  Although Musicmatch is not as robust, it is not crashing on me.  I would like to purchase Media Jukebox, however I cannot see this as being a viable replacement until this issue is resolved.

Can you narrow down when it happens?

Can you change any property of any file or does it always crash?

Are any of the files read only?

What did you use to encode them?  What happens if you encode with MJ?

Are they on a network drive?

etc.

Can you narrow down when it happens?
>>Can you change any property of any file or does it always crash?
If I am selecting multiple songs, it will open the property window, but it will crash when it starts to update.
If I am selecting a single problem song it will consistently crash.

>>Are any of the files read only?
No, I have checked all songs in my library (6700).  They all have read-write attributes.

>>What did you use to encode them? What happens if you encode with MJ?
They were either downloaded off the internet, or I encoded them using Musicmatch.

>>Are they on a network drive?
No, they are on my local hard drive.

I have also experienced getting an error saying that tags could not be updated because they were read-only or were in use.  However, neither were the case.  And, in those situations, it did update the tags...very odd.

Thanks for your help.

Do you have them open with any other application at the same time?

For example, I have problems editing images when Windows Explorer has them open in the Filmstrip or Thumbnail view.

Older versions of MusicMatch had some tagging "issues".  Maybe someone else here will remember.

Try tagging in ID3V1 only and see if that works.

Try editing something other than genre.  Year, for example.

MusicMatch continues to have tagging problems.  Files often fail to update appropriately and the last 2-3 characters of each field may be truncated.   After several emails back and forth, their tech support folks stated that they have a problem which is under investigation.  That's when I decided to leave MM behind and find a new jukebox.

When I attempted to edit the files in MJ that were ripped using MM, I had the same problem that you are encountering.  MJ gave an erroneous error message that it couldn't update the file properties or would just crash.  I found that if I removed all tags, saved the file, reopened the file and let MJ create the tags, all would be fine.  I had a problem with an album that I imported this evening.  MJ crashed everytime I tried to edit properties.  Then I remembered that the friend, who sent me the album, uses MM. I removed the tags and let MJ recreate them and all is well.

Additionally, I never experience this problem with files not ripped by MM.  I'm totally convinced that the problem is with MM and not with MJ.

Thanks, Shelly.  Can you email one of the files to me?  jimh @ jriver.com.  We may be able to fix this on our side.  Really appreciate the detail.

Nice day of sailing here.  Cool wind, 15 - 25 MPH, out of the northeast.  We went out to watch the start of a race that had around 100 boats milling around the starting line.  Beautiful.

Have you heard how many nests they counted?

About 200, I think.  It's the entire population in that area.  They take eggs from nests that get abandoned, hatch them in an incubator, and put them back under another nesting bird.

Sorry, gonna screw this thread up a little.

Just had a thought about when we first moved into this house about six years ago. We have birds galore around here. So, we got the bright idea to count and list how many different species we have seen. Even went out and bought the ' National Audubon Society - Field Guide To North American Birds' identification book. Priceless really. Anyways, we stopped counting after about seventy-five.

Most birds are fairly common, others rare indeed for this area.

The rarest I've seen yet - Lazuli Bunting. Marked like a Bluebird, but smaller. Have not seen another since that first year. A picture

Jim,

It's in the mail - hope it helps.

I think one of the prettiest sights on the water is the start of a sailboat race.  We often get to see the start of the Mackinaw and it's quite memorable.  Cool day here - perfect for cleaning the boat.

Attn: Shelly.........Your descritption seem to match my scenario. How do I discard the tag info and let MJ recreate it?
I've spent hours naming and tagging tracks and I would hate to lose it all! Could you describe the process to me? Thanks!!

We're still trying to get a problem file to test on.  Can you send one to jimh @ jriver.com?  Thanks.

I downloaded the latest version yesterday and it seemed to solve my tagging problem.  I updated the tags on about 1000 songs and it didn't crash once.  (I spent 6 hours doing it)

I turned on my computer today and all my old tags were back.

When I'm in the software and I change the tags, the tags appear to save.  (i.e. I can click from artist to artist and the updated information is displayed)  However, if I exit the software and restart it the changes are gone.

Any suggestions?

Thanks...
