The ASIO driver is not allowing a sample rate of 48000.

There are two calls to the ASIO driver:
1) canSampleRate(48000) must return ASE_OK
2) setSampleRate(48000) must return ASE_OK

One of these two calls is failing.  There is either a driver or configuration bug.

You will have to contact the authors of the ASIO driver.  We will be happy to help them if needed.

I previously wrote to the sound card manufacturer and received this answer:

"Eventually the reason is, that the application does not support all required ASIO formats. It supports only ASIO format 18. The Trace driver runs on ASIO format 27 from version 2.13 on. So either you get the developers of the jriver to support ALL ASIO formats (as they should) or you use driver version 202 or earlier. You can find it here: www.drivers.marian.de. It would be better, if jriver would support ASIO format 27, because this offers significant performance/stability advantages"

I tried to use the driver earlier and earned a card, but only in stereo.
And we need to play a DVD in 5.1.

We do support all ASIO formats.  Their driver is failing on one of the two calls I posted above.  It's possible they are depending on some particular call order, but I have no way to guess what it might be without their help.

It is worth stating that a huge range of ASIO drivers work well with JRiver, so I do not believe there is a systemic problem on our side.

I'd be happy to work with the driver maker.  I wrote the ASIO implementation for JRiver, and you can tell them they can email me directly: matt at jriver dot com.

like explained before, the problems you describe seem to be originating in the playback software. Currently we are investigating, whether or not there is a work around to make it work anyway. Please allow some time until monday (6.6.2011), that I can contact you with the results.

I sent the following response to Andreas less than an hour after he wrote me on 6/7/2011.  I have not heard back.

Thanks for the email.

JRiver follows this flow when opening an ASIO device:

1) Load / start the ASIO driver
2) Call ASIODriver::getChannels(...)
3) Call ASIODriver::canSampleRate(...)
4) Call ASIODriver::setSampleRate(...)
5) Create buffers, etc.

The Marian hardware is failing at #3 or #4.  This has not been a common problem.

Would you like a free Media Center license for testing?  Would you consider providing a piece of test hardware to JRiver?  We have this arrangement with several other audio manufacturers, and I think it benefits both companies.

Received a response from MARIAN:

Dear Alex,

after contacting the developers of the application it became clear what the reason for the problem is. It happens when the software tries to access the card asking for a specific samplerate. Unfortunately this procedure is not standardized. The application is making this call at a time, when the card does not expect this - that is when the problem appears. The problem can thus be solved from 2 sides. Either the application changes the procedure of call or we adjust our driver to that application. In other words: the problem CAN be solved. Unfortunately we will not be able to do this up to the 18th, because the necessary adjustment and new release of the driver would take a bit longer.

We wrote a work arround - the generic part of the driver now answers to canSamplerate also, if the channels to be used are not already known.
