Last night, I watched a pretty good film, set in Viet Nam, and called "The Vertical Ray of the Sun".

PG-13, that's as far as I generally venture.

Beautiful cinematography. Pretty good story.

Netflix is good.

I agree. Netflix is working out well for me too. I thought "The Others" was very well done, and Nicole Kidman's performance blew me away.

This afternoon my wife and I watched the first movie I have watched in about 2 years. It was "River Wild" with Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon. Amazing ride through some of the wildest rapids and falls available.

One of my favorite movies is "The Counterfiet Traitor," set during the time of WWII

"Apocalpyse Now (Redux)" by Francis Ford Coppola. Nearly 200mins (or 3.4 hours) in the cinema with no breaks.

Film-making for me is a form of story telling. In Amelie, between other things, I loved the way you were "brought" into the mental world of an introvert person, in a very funny and entertaining way. The connection with reality and all it's problems depends on the story the film-maker is trying to tell you. I fail to see the connection between a fictional story and the ultra-right in Europe. If "Condom movie" (that from your commments I interpret you classify as light, entertaining movies that do not discuss "serious" social problems) were connected with the ultra-right movements, let me tell we would be in big trouble here in North America

I Love Netflix, I have been with them for over 2 1/2 years and I haven't regretted it. I have watched a lot of movies that I normally would not have rented through them. Usually because I just don't have the time to rent, watch and then have to return it to Blockbuster. I find I can take my time and after I've watched it just drop it in that handy mailer. Of course I did buy the Jethro Tull DVD and The Harry Potter movie and I plan on watching them this weekend (I have a 3 day weekend)

Last good movie (and VERY disturbing) that I saw was Steven Spielberg's and Stanley Kubrick's A.I... The movie blew me away, I found that I was thinking about the movie even when I was driving which is not a good thing.

It is a solution to escape real life ,and why not.But most of the people who gave they vote to Le Pen would like to live in an 'Amelie' word.Cause 'before' was much better.Before was safer,'more white' and so on.Today is evil
It is not because it is a light comedy-a very good one by the way
I will say that this french movie is a picture of the feeling of part of France people

Beside it,i like this movie.The twisted part about who is the one with pictures of him anywhere is brillant

I've seen it and would recommend it. The story is good but somewhat formulaic (boys coming of age, learning about the serious side of life, a little over sentimentalized). What I really liked was getting an inside glimpse of a culture and region (Mexico) that I know almost nothing about. The music and cinematography were very good.

We watched "The Others" on DVD (courtesy of Netflix) last week and loved it.

I saw it on an overnight flight to the UK a couple of months ago on the little 2/3 inch screen with the headphones etc. I think I was the only one awake on the flight and I was scared to death at one particular scene. If you've seen the movie you know the scene.

Anyway, my wife wanted to see it forgetting that I had seen it previously. On a regular TV with Dolby 5.1 surround sound it was obviously a lot more intense experience but I was still hit with the same impact (hair standing up on my arms and on the back of my neck etc.) the second time around. I think that that is a sign of a good movie.

This past weekend we saw "Stiff Upper Lips" (again from Netflix). Great movie! It's a spoof on those Merchant Ivory movies. Very funny and definitely recommended.

However, Amelie is definitely the best movie of the year so far. Wonderful!

I have to agree that the Others is well made. I currently own it (dang DVD player went on a fritz and now the Others is stuck inside while being repaired). From Hell is another well done movie. Goes along well with the theory I was told doing the Jack the Ripper tour while visiting in London (a must for those who visit). Plus being a HUGE Johnny Depp fan I had to see it. He is so well traversed in his acting. He is amazing.

Currently waiting for the COunt of Monty Cristo. Another well done movie.
Spy Games was another good one, not the greatest, but good.

A few I can watch over and over again.

- Gladiator (watch it alteast 30 times)
- Snatch
- Highlander (seen it HUNDREDS of times)

There are more, but these are at the tip of my mind.

Deuce Bigelow Male Gigolo - Own this one on DVD. The gal that does the Turrets is a riot.

Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me - Mike Meyers does a great job at all the roles he plays.

Shawshank Redemption - Can you believe Stephen King wrote this? Terrific story.

Bad Reviews....

Star Wars Attack of the Clones was the biggest bomb I've ever seen. And I'm a fan. The plot was so thin you could see through it.

A.I. - Please wake me when it's over. Talk about a movie that people will get suckered into seeing because of a directors name. ICK!!!

Jim, from their nominations it seems the interact crowd are not particularly inclined towards a gentle, subtle foreign language film like "Vertical Ray". It is exquisite. I particularly liked the way it deliberately neglects to answer every single question raised.

Similarly gorgeous and softly understated gems of very recent vintage are "Monsoon Wedding" and an American film "You Can Count On Me". It is written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan, who is a genius and was my favourite film of last year.

The problem (for me anyway) with trying to come up with a list of favorite films is that it's often hard to separate the film from the context in which you saw it. I loved Star Wars but I was at a very impresionable age when it was released. Would I love it as much if I saw it for the first time today? Hard to say.

I'm mainly an action\sci-fi movie buff.... Although I like quirky movies as well. Like Snatch, Fight Club, Very Bad Things (hysterical!), Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary. I'm a sucker for Drew Barrymore movies, and I like the occasional Romantic Comedy (which is rather strange for somebody who has no desire at all for marriage).

saw a very stange movie today Von Trier's Europa.I think that it has another name in US

It is a superb and fantastic movie at the picture level
But the all movie is not that good.The story,the characters are not at the level of the pictures
The almost always on voice of the narrator and what he says are close to be just ridiculous

And the symbolism is so heavy and confused that you feel like being feed with big spoons of honey during all the movie

The kind of movie you have to see with a walkman on your hears.I may do this

They don't make movies like this anymore! Anyone seen A Thousand Clowns (1965) with Jason Robards? Excellent movie about self-identity and being true to yourself against all the pressures of the system.

"Grand Canyon" was on TV last night. One of my favorite all-time movies. I think the movie either leaves you cold or you "just get it". Lawrence Kasdan wrote and directed.

When Lawrence Kasdan is on target he really hits the mark - he co-wrote "Empire Strikes Back", "Return of the Jedi", and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (why isn't this out on DVD??).

He also wrote and directed "Body Heat" (Kathleen Turner - urgh!), "The Big Chill", "Silverado" (the best western of the 80's IMHO), "The Accidental Tourist", and "Mumford".

He went a little crazy with "The Bodyguard" and "Wyatt Earp" but I'll forgive him those couple of turkeys.

And, his son Jake is looking like a great director in the making too - "Zero Effect" and "Orange County" are both good movies.

Lars Van Trier is one strange guy. Have you ever seen the made-for-Danish-TV series "the Kingdom I and II"? Impossible to describe. Parts are over the top funny, other parts quite spooky. Each segment runs 4|PLS| hours. He's working on III, if they don't wrestle him into a straightjacket first.

Also, British film circa 1946: "Dead of Night". Series of vignette ghost stories, with wonderful turn from Michael Redgrave as a ventriloquist whose dummy manipulates him.

Kingdom is a cult movie here.10 months a year at the Tel-Aviv cinematheque and this since years
with,from time to time,a full shabbat with all Kingdom 1 and 2.There is a break for lunch.You order your meal before the movie starts-around 10 in the morning-And at the break you find a table with your name and get food in no time
I saw them few times cause danish with hebrew subtitles is quitte a chalenge to me
Most of the time the sentence changes before i can read it in full..........
Lars Van Trier has great succes here.His 'breaking the waves' was for more than one year in movie theater

One great movie who had an HUDGE succes here is 'Straigth's story'I love this movie
