Analyze Audio keeps freezing
« on: June 22, 2011, 02:56:30 pm »

I recently upgraded to MC16 and am trying to analyze several files (mp3's) I added to the library.  It keeps freezing up randomly during the audio analysis.  Sometimes it does 40 files, sometimes 200 and then it just freezes.  Any ideas or suggestions?

Went back to MC 15 and am not having any issues - so it definitely is MC16.....

Are the files local?   Or are they on a network drive?

What version of MC did you try?  MC 16.0.116 is at the top of this board.

They are on a network drive.  And yes that is the version I am using.  MC15 works with these files so I am wondering what changed?

Please test with file on your local drive.  I'm guessing you're seeing a bug in the NAS software.

Hi,

There doesn't appear to be one specific file that is causing the hang up (and trying to analyze over 5000 doesn't make it easy to figure out which one - although it wasn't the same file any of the 4 or 5 times I tried to run it).

As I mentioned went back to MC15 and it worked fine with MC16 - stopped at different points and just froze - 46 files, 150, 230, around 500.  Finally gave up and just went back to MC15 and updated tags in MC 16.  My NAS has been working with MC15 for over 2 years across XP and Win 7 upgrade, sharing across multiple devices - xbox, ps3, other computers so I don't think it is my NAS.  The only change to my system that has caused an issue is MC16..... :(

Do you have logging turned on?  I'm sure someone would take a look if you have a log showing the freeze.

I haven't seen this with my network files, but they're all served by Windows 7 itself.

Test a local library.  Eliminate the NAS, just as a test.  MC16 is faster than MC15.

1. I have noticed there are fewer 'freezeups' using MC15 in general (much smaller memory footprint than MC16)

2. Taking batches from my "NAS" drives (WD 3TB/USB3 running @ USB2 plus their internal i/o driver overhead burden)
and analyzing them on a local drive eliminates the issue.  Great storage drives otherwise, cheap at Costco and sometimes on sale at BBuy.

3. Any memory manager suggestions are welcome...O&O CleverCache doesn't seem to improve ram management.

I tested it on my local drive and you're correct - faster and no interuptions through 1900 files.  BUT you shouldn't have to move your files to make it work.....  MC15 didn't have this issue so not sure why MC16 does??  :)  Should be new and improved.  Either way took care of my problem but maybe something should be looked at?

Is it possible that MC15 is doing one file at a time and MC16 is doing 2 or 4 at a time?  The I/O pattern would be really different if that's the case.

Probably because MC16 is faster and you've found a bug in the NAS firmware.  You could try updating it.

Another possibility is a virus checker or something similar getting in the way of disk reads and writes.

Try an Internet search for similar problems with your NAS drive.  Contact the manufacturer.

I'm having the same issues as the original poster. I'm using 16.0.122 and when analyzing more than one file at I time I get freezes after 40 or more files. If I set it to one file at a time it will usually do thousands with no problem.

I'm using a very clean (only MC and a couple other programs) with no network connections, no anti-virus or other stuff. I'm running Windows 7/64 on an i7 sandybridge that does great on memtest and prime95.

I've also noticed that if I edit tags while the analyze is running (even one file at a time) it will often hang.

Anybody have any additional thoughts on the matter?

Thanks

Do you have any ogg files?

Are the files on a local drive?

Re: Analyze Audio keeps freezing--local vs. external hd
« Reply #14 on: July 04, 2011, 03:18:36 pm »

My conclusion after analyzing thousands of .mp3s recently is that the location of the hd...local or external...makes little difference in freeze-ups.  I think that it's a combination of my 3 year old cpu/ram combo and the fact that MC16 has a large mem/cache/core requirement with apparently no throttling that makes analyzing more than 1 file at a time impossible in large batches.

I had trouble with my FreeNas server doing the same thing, but on a local drive there is no problem.

Are the files on a local drive?

All my files are on local Sata drives, Flac and mp3's, no ogg or other types in my collection.

I've just checked and made sure auto import is off and tested some more. I could not get more than a couple hundred with 4 files at once, better with 3 at once, maybe close to a 1000 with 2 at once before hanging. With one at a time I'm now getting close to 10,000 without a problem...

I'll be done analyzing one way or another in a couple days so not a big concern. Media Center has transformed my home theater and I couldn't be happier. Keep up the good work.

I have about 80,000 files remaining to be analyzed; MC16 takes 40-45% of cpu analyzing one at a time...

I exited both SuperAntiSpy and MalwareBytes and dumped both processes.  CPU still 39-44%.

I still have MC15 on this same machine; later today I will set it up and run a big batch...as a matter of curiosity.

Under MC's Help menu, turn on logging and see if you can see what is taking time.

What types of files?  Are there any video files?  Have you tried a single filetype?  It might help narrow down the problem.

All files .mp3 only.  I don't think processing speed per file is the issue, except the heavy cpu load for analyzing one file at a time.  For me, if overall speed is reduced when processing 2-4 files at once, that sounds logical; app freezing instead of throttling is my issue...Example of log:

If you're having this problem, could you post your benchmark results from Help > Benchmark?

We haven't had any luck reproducing this here yet.

Please email any logs showing this hang to matt at jriver dot com.  Preferably send the full log in a ZIP file.

Thanks.

Jim had the good idea of running 100 files at a time, which led to us reproducing a thread-lock in the debugger.

So please try again when 16.0.125 (or newer) is available.  Hopefully the issue will be fixed.

Sweet! I am been having these same freezes - with local or network for a looonnnng time. I used to think it was the 4 @ a time thing - so I backed off to 2 @ a time but with MC 16 - I have been getting a lot of lockups as of late. Usually so bad that MC stops responding and has to be killed manually.

Glad to see that this one was finally found.

It may occur much more often on a slower machine.

We're still interested in seeing how your machine benchmarks, as Matt said above.

I did have a lock-up last night analyzing about a 14 file chunk of mp3's (4 at a time). Had to stop and restart MC, but files ran through fine the second time around. This is on a I7 machine - Win7 64 - local WD 1tb black. have not had that happen since I moved analyzing to my local drive.

On my blazing fast i7 I've just gotten to over 14,000 one-file-at-a-time mode, so for me it only happens when I bump it up past one-at-a-time. I've got about 60k to go, I wonder if I will finish before 16.0.125 hits the streets.

This box is always off line and never runs any virus or other junk, Just MC, Acronis Backup and Allway Sync when needed, everything else is done on other systems.

I appreciate the fact that the JRiver crew is even looking into this, it shows why Media Center is so clean and powerful...

Keep up the good work,

Yay!  I get far fewer lock ups these days, but it does still happen to me from time to time.  Will be nice to get it resolved.

I've upgraded to build 125 and the file analysis still stops for me.

The files I'm analyzing are all on a local drive, are mp3/m4a/flac and I did not have this problem on MC15 (and I can't remember having it on early builds of 16, but am not sure).

I still continue to get odd "hesitations" with .125 - not a true freeze or stop on local files. I do all my analysis via the Drives and Devices area by selecting a folder with the tracks in it, highlighting my targets and choosing Analyze Audio from my right click selection. Even on say a single folder with just 10 tracks...the first two start up fine (I currently have this set to 2 @ a time) and then the next two will sit there for like 4 or 5 seconds and then finally continue on. I am always only analyzing FLAC tracks.

No stops or freezes (yet) but a bit frustrated wondering just what the heck MC is doing if it cannot flip thru 10 tracks 2 @ a time...it's not like my PC is a slouch.

With FLAC files, it needs to re-write the entire file.

Good to know....still - strange that with some groups of 10 or 20 - MC will burn thru these "re-writes" with ease and others.

I should note that the bulk of my FLACS are not created by MC directly...most are via EZ-CD Extractor Pro 2011.

Try the filetypes one at a time to see if some work and some don't.

Try ripping with MC to see if that's the difference.

Hmmm - are you saying that the FLACs created by MC are somehow different than any other tool out there? I was under the impression that this is a fairly standard format.

Also - my FLAC process involves a lot more than just ripping from a CD - I receive many a file via archive format and a huge buzz kill with MC is it's inability to load a disk image from a cue file and then allow me to create the individual FLAC files from it.

EZCD does this with no problem so it's my go to app for this type of conversion.

Not that I'm aware of, but you could find out by testing ripping with MC to see if the problem still occurs.

In .125, over 4000 mp3s just went through fine on my system, 4 at a time. i'll test m4a/flac forthcoming.

I did 5000 files 4-at-a-time with 16.0.125 last night, and it worked fine.

My Win 7/64 analysis issue is fixed. Ive just done over 20k .mp3s with 4 at a time in a few hours. I'll be done with my collection by morning. .125 fixed my issue! It would have taken three more days one-at-a time.

I'll try 20k .flac (EAC) files tomorrow and report back...

Great work from my perspective.

I agree that the latest .rev has solved the freeze problem.  Now I can finish my 70,000 tunes without resorting to MC15.

Files are on a Seagate external drive connected through USB2.  Queued up a bunch of files (a couple thousand) to analyze and went off to the store.  Came back, analyze was hung.  Took forever to stop it from the hang.  Now it won't scan at all, on the same stack of files.  Just hangs.

Files are a mix of 24/96 flac, Apple Lossless, 256bit AAC, and a handful of mp3.

Any ideas?

Build 173 is available at the top of the MC16 board.  It's worth trying.

A bad file?

Reboot?

Let it run.  MC may be running but not responding.  USB 2.0 could take a while.

Thanks, Jim.  I'll try the new build.  I'm pretty sure it's a freeze, because the progress reporting stalled with two files partially analyzed, disk activity stopped, and once I told MC to stop the analysis, it took a VERY long time to stop, and then the system froze up.  Crashed windows explorer, and then couldn't access the drive in any way at all until a reboot, and when I tried to shut down, had to force a shutdown because 15 minutes later, it was still trying to shut down.  Repeated that pattern twice (science training, I don't believe anything unless it's replicable... dumb.)  Set it up for scanning again, got the same results, about 500 or so items in, total freeze.

I'm now betting that it's an interaction with the drive and drivers.  I installed a trial version on the music server computer for my studio and scanned about 800 big lossless FLAC files with no issues.  Same O/S.  The differences between the two systems are processor (dual core Atom on the system that froze vs my studio's quad core pentium), memory (4gb vs 8gb), disk and music location (USB2 Seagate disk vs onboard disk).  Seems that something bad happens in the interaction between MC Analyzer and the pipe to the Seagate, and it goes into full lock.  Been serving from that disk for almost two years now with no issues using iTunes and SqueezeServer, so I'm pretty sure it's Analyze/MC specific.

Also, the home music server has White Bear on it because I was hoping to use my Logitech Transporter instead of a USB link to a DAC for playing music... The White Bear icon turns red from time to time, but I don't think that's related.  It's not doing anything really when this happens.
