2.1 output requires a soundcard or DAC that can output 6 channels.  The unused channels will be silent.

Please note that for a traditional 2.1 desktop speaker system, you normally connect them to the computer as a 2.0 system.  The speakers themselves split to 2.1.

It is because you are trying to play a file with a higher bitrate than your hardware supports.  The auto-configuration should work, if you just answer that dialog with the "change and continue" option.

I don't know what hardware you have there though, and if it really supports 64-bit audio.  You might be able to get some better results than that if you tell us what audio hardware you have, and we can come up with a good set of Output Settings.

For example: I also see you are resampling everything to 44.1kHz.  This is probably unnecessary.  Usually you'd want to only resample unsupported sample rates (below 44.1 and above 96 or something like that), and leave everything else alone.

Ah, yes.  If you only are using a single stereo output from your hardware, then you'd want to select 2.0 output in MC, not 2.1.

Infrasonic Quartet Sound Card, shorter than I need to choose two channels (stereo) speakers for my 2.1? or, what is best? I'm listening through ASIO, but what bitdepth better to choose? 24-bit or 64-bit

Have you connected your speakers using three output lines on the soundcard (or 1.5 stereo headphone jacks), or are you using two output lines (or 1 stereo headphone jack)?

If you are using a single headphone jack, that means the speakers are connected to the computer with two channels.  The speakers themselves must be converting from 2.0 to 2.1.

So it would be best to select 2 channel output inside Media Center.

Use the highest bitdepth your hardware supports.  If you use ASIO, the setting is ignored.

Yes, I would select 2 channels with JRSS.

This does nothing for stereo content (which is good).

But when you play 5.1 or 7.1 content (or whatever else), it will get mixed nicely to 2.0.
