Not a powerful enough PC would be my guess.  Have a look perf mon and see if you are maxing out either core

It has an ION GPU so it should play well. WMP has no problems with this video.

In MC, all cores are maxed out. not in WMP.

I dont beleive RO or RO HQ is using hw accel, so the ION gpu will not help you. I see the same with my AsRock with a ION GPU. It woks for me when using PowerDVD that can do HW accel.

I've no experience on atom ion systems but maybe you could use LAV Cuvid to decode video.
So select Red October/HQ wtih additional filters and check LAV Cuvid.

This will be automatic in a build that should be public next week.  Thanks to nevcairiel.

Sounds great! I just tried it with my Atom MC with ION gpu and it worked just perfect. Adding DirectVobSub from the newest CCCP build gave me my subtitles back, even placed in the right position on the screen.

I've installed .128 and checked RO HQ. This should supposedly use LAV CUID when possible. Should it do so for my .mts file? It's no longer slowmo but rather choppy.

I don't see any lav stuff expect for splitter and audio. The decoder is ffdshow. That's the filter in question, isn't it? Here's the graph:

It's only used with Nvidia hardware.  Other hardware won't support it.

Ions are Nvidia based. Does MC download Lav Cuvid decoder or just check if it is already available in the system?

Yes, it seems as if lav cuvid has been downloaded. I can see it in the windows file structure under users...roaming .

As a test, I tried to select ROHQ with additional filters but I cannot see lav cuvid. It appears it hasn't been registered for regular direct show.

So I tried manually registering the filter using the .bat file and I get "the module 'LAVCUVID.AX' failed to load" and further down "The specified procedure failed to load". (i ran the batch file as admin btw.)

You may need a newer NVIDIA driver.
I don't know which version of LAV CUVID the MC guys used to bundle with MC16 - i would recommend the "Legacy CUDA" version, it has a way lower requirement on the NVIDIA driver, with no real-world disadvantages.

Upgrading driver now.

I Searched the referred post http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=160290 for the legacy lav cuvid version but I couldn't see any legacy version for win7 64. Only a legacy 32 bit version.

Raldo you always want the 32-Bit version of the FILTERS as MC is 32-Bit (it does not matter if Win is 32 or 64 bit but what the app is).

Of course. I installed the 32 bit older version, but it seems as if mc cannot use lav cuvid as a decoder.

I tried both RO std/hq with addl filters lav cuvid, but the filter info (rightclick context) does not list lav cuvid.

The Red October system is separate from the Windows DirectShow system.  If you want to use a filter with another player, you will need to install the filter.

The advantage to this is that you (or another player) can do whatever you need to make other software work, and MC can do its own thing, choosing known good filters and settings without affecting your other settings.

Ok, so we need to find out why MC's version of lav cuid does not work?

Raldo, try using RO Standard.

Also, the latest (.9) release of Cuvid is for CUDA 4 and above. I had to update my gpu drivers to get this.

The release on the doom forums is for 32bit and 64bit from what I can remember.

I'm using an Atom / Ion setup on my system and RO STD works fine with cuvid

I've installed the latest driverset from Asrock but I'm still not sure which version of the driver (and thus CUDA version) my system has. I find nVidias control panel confusing and it's hard to find the correct drivers on nVidia's pages.

But I'll try to find the driver version/cuda version and keep you posted.

Thanks. The driver version is 186.34 . Do you know if this supports CUDA 4.0?

Edit: Page two on the system info page shows the cuda version to be 2.2

Those drivers are really old.

Here are the newest drivers

Also, this leads me to believe that you don't actually have ION graphics:

It works now. Startup time is also quite fast, just a few seconds.

The conclusion is (as usual) get the latest driver. Goto the nVidia pages (and not the motherboard manufacturer's pages, in my case Asrock).

Also, this leads me to believe that you don't actually have ION graphics:

This catches me from time to time.  MC's CPU detection isn't CPU-Z quality.  The speed is usually right, but ignore the detected CPU model.

My Intel HTPC died yesterday (temporary, due to failed SSD). I replaced it for the time being with my ION PC. I wanted to use LAV CUVID to get the CUDA acceleration, so I had to go with RO HQ. However, that was a little too much for a high bit-rate 1080p video, so I had to use HQ with additional filters - replacing MadVR with EVR. This worked like a charm, and I would recommend it if you continue to have periodic speed issues.

It works now. Startup time is also quite fast, just a few seconds.

The conclusion is (as usual) get the latest driver. Goto the nVidia pages (and not the motherboard manufacturer's pages, in my case Asrock).

Glad to hear you got it working  ;)

Granted, the 180 series drivers are even too old for the legacy cuda build - it requires at least 190. :D

But upgrading is always recommended, the playback performance is much better with the latest driver series.
