I just enabled authentication, and the first time it made me login to load the library from the server. it doesn't do that anymore. but it does now ask me to login twice when i start playing a file most of the time.

Bump, anyone from j. River have any idea?

It's asking you to login on the Server machine?

Can you describe the situation a little more? How many computers are involved, what version of JRiver are you running, etc.

2 systems. 1 client 1 sever
client running win 7, server running 2008
when i click on play for any file on the client system, 80% of the time it pops up a box asking for my authentication name and password (jriver authentication not windows) the message is generated by media center as it uses the font ive set up inside media center. i enter the name and password. if i enter anything other than my password set up in the server authentication options, media center pops up an error saying "something went wrong with playback, details:windows media player cannot access the file....". if i enter the correct info the login window, it instantly asks again, this time with the exact same wording, exact same box, but in the system font. After I enter my login here it plays my file. if i enter anything other than my password the second time media center just hangs at the "opening" stage.

not sure why its referencing windows media player, possibly because of the underlying engine. but that's the situation.

I really appreciate the time to help me with this!

Was the client working properly before you turned on authentication? If you turn it off again, do you still have playback problems?

Here's what I would try, in order

- Change the authentication on the server (new ID and password). Avoid special characters.

- Reset the Media Network on your Server (Tools > Options >Media Network > Access Key > Reset

- Iinstall JRiver on a second client machine and see if you get the same login problems

- Uninstall and reinstall JRiver on the client machine

MC doesn't use WMP unless you tell it to.  Find the file type you're having trouble with and try setting it to automatic.  Options/File Types.

Make sure you have only one file in the playlist you're trying.

Does it have last.fm files in the list?  Options/Services and set up the login/pw there.

Are the files DRM "protected"?

It is now set to automatic on both MKV and AVI (the only 2 file types I stream.) Does that message indicate its trying to use the WMP engine? That might be the issue as they were both not set to automatic. Ill try it out and reply with whether it fixed it or not.
no drm, no last fm.
