Some TV-Shows in a category/group called Unassigned
« on: August 18, 2011, 09:46:18 am »

Most of my Movie and TV Show collection (m2ts and MKV format) imported nicely from MyMovies program into MC. The coverart and movie data displays as expected in MC Theater View. FYI - I use MyMovies4 to store my movies and it downloads the meta-data and cover art automatically. It is a free program (Collection Management) if anyone wants to try it. My problem is that a couple of theTV episodes that were imported into MC show up in the category/group "unassigned". I have not figured out why and how to get them back into the proper category. I looked at the Tags and see no difference between the "TV Shows" that are in the Television category and TV Shows that are in the "Unassigned" category. For example, three episodes of "Lost" don't show up with the other season-one episodes under "Television", these three episodes are in the Unassigned group.

I also cleared the Library and re-imported, but same results.

What do I need to do to fix this?

you need to tag the media sub-type to "tv-show"

I think it is already tagged properly. At least I don't see a difference in the Tags btween the files that are listed properly and the ones in the Unassigned group. Can you run through the tagging steps so I can be sure I'm doing it right?

I don't use the default views, so I don't know exactly what you're referring to. However, while a Category can be something more complicated, it's usually just based on a field (or "tag"). So if you're looking at a [Series] Category and some Lost episodes are under "Unassigned" instead of "Lost," then the cause can only be [Series] has not been set to "Lost" for those episodes (it's empty). If you have any doubt about what it is you're looking at or how the Category is determined, examine the view in the Theatre View configuration.

Your problem IS the missing TV Show tag. I'll bet on it. The reason for this, as we have mentioned to J River devs, is that todays automatic Media Sub Type guessing will never auto detect all correctly. Therefor we need a way to select different media types under import, and that this media then is tagged automatically.

To correct this now, you have to find the field "Media Sub Type". This is not normally shown. You'll have to hit the Action window at the lower left corner, hit the Tag link, and then select "Show All tags" from the small corner of the Tag Action pane. I think it's on the top left side. You select your media files and look for the library field called "Media Sub Type", and you'll notice that there is no values here. Select TV Shows, and it should be grouped up with the rest of your TV Shows.

I just rip my movies to folders and MyMovies does all the "scraping". That meta data is stored with the movie as an .xml file with .jpg cover art.

Then I have JRiver set to look in those movie folders (in my case \\HTPC-Z68\MyMovies) and all the data gets imported automatically. There may be some meta-data not getting imported but if so, I haven't noticed it missing.

Thanks - but that I presume this will only export/import the movies information - no?. You said earlier that it imported TV Shows, I was under the impression from reading MyMovies forum that the metadata from TV Shows, was not exportable?

LOL - just noticed your question on MyMovies forum http://www.mymovies.dk/forum.aspx?g=posts&t=26152 - guess that answers my query. But how did you import them if not using MyMovies?

I am importing the TV-Shows (mine are in MKV format).
In the Library& Folders setup, I have it set to monitor my Movies and TV Show directories ("MyTV, MyMovies, MyMusic" etc.). So when a new TV Show is added (I create a new folder named after TV Show and use subfolders for the Seasons (i.e. all Season One episodes go into same Season One folder). Then when a new episode (or new folder if I'm adding a new TV series) is added, MC16 imports the new file/data.
I have figured out how to sort the Theater View > Television > Programs display so that it lists just the TV Show "name". Then I click on that to get the episodes listed. The episodes are just listed/displayed as the filename I gave it - so "Lost s1.e01. Pilot.mkv" is how it displays (i would have liked to import the meta-data for the episode and just display the episode title and description, but that doesn't work so far).

As you guessed, I have no data in the media-sub type field. I will populate that over the weekend. Unforunately I have only been able to enter data one record at a time. I have about 150 TV shows/records. Is there any secret "copy-paste" function I should know about? it would be nice if I could copy (TV Show) the tag and highlight a bunch of cells at the same time and then paste the value.

Select multiple files with Ctrl or Shift and left mouse click.  Then change the tag.

If this filename pattern is consistent, you should be able to set [Series], [Season], [Episode] and [Name] (with the Episode title)—for all 150 records at once—using Fill properties from filename.

Select multiple files with Ctrl or Shift and left mouse click.  Then change the tag.

This is where I'm doing my editing. Is this the right place? I can copy the field/word "TV Shows", and I can select multiple records now, but there is no "paste" function when I left click.  It seems like I am selecting the entire record (all columns) when I use the CNTRL left click. I'll keep at it.

You're in the right place. To keep things simple, let's say all you want to do is set [Media Sub Type] = "TV Show" for S01 of Eureka. Starting from the point shown...

  • Shift-Click any cell of the E12 row to select all S01 records.
  • A tricky bit you might be missing: Ctrl-Click the [Media Sub Type] cell of the S01 record. The sole purpose of doing so is to make this cell the "active" one. This will actually deselect the entire row, so Ctrl-Click again to select it.
  • Press F2 to put the cell in edit mode.
  • Generally, you would enter the desired value now. But the first record already has the value you want, so just press Enter to copy that value to all the selected records.

Once you get used to it, you'll find it a little simpler than described. If you do the Shift-Click of step 1 by clicking on the column you want to edit, then you can skip step 2. I describe it this way so you'll understand the significance the "active" column. Step 2 is also necessary if you've already selected a group of records, but then want to change the value in a column other than the currently active one. Also, when you do step 2, you may do the Ctrl-Click on any of the selected rows—it doesn't have to be the first one. Pressing F2 will put the first record in edit mode in any case.

This worked very well! Saved me a ton of time.

I had a little trouble setting up the file name pattern at first - but what I had to do, or figured out (if anyone else wants to do this) is:
My TV Shows are named "Lost s1.e01 Pilot.mkv"
Set the filename pattern to [SERIES] [SEASON].[EPISODE] [NAME]  --- So I have a blank space between [Lost] and [s1] just like in the filename, and a "period" between [s1] and e01] and a blank space between [e01] and [Pilot] so on.

Maybe for future rips, I should not use the "s" in "s1" and the "e" in "e01" in my filenames. I'll have to see how MC deals with the letters when sorting displaying in Theater View.

There's nothing wrong with your filenames. There are other unambiguous forms you could use, like "1x01", but what you have is fine. [Season] and [Episode] are string-type fields and they might sort properly with the letters, but I think a better practice is to save only the number. It seems to me [SERIES] s[SEASON].e[EPISODE] [NAME] should do that for you.
