Stability Seems To Be Getting Worse
« on: May 25, 2002, 05:03:10 pm »

I have outlined my problems below, although I have now just about given up ever getting MJ8 to work.  If you could please note that neither Realone or Windows Mediaplayer were having any of these problems. I have just re installed Win98SE and a fresh MJ8 as I thought a clean start would solve my probs, however the lockups and illegal operations are driving me nuts.

ILLEGAL OPERATION
Immediately on opening MJ8 following the install process, MJ8 performed an illegal operation.

MEDIA JUKEBOX caused an invalid page fault in
module at 0000:760e1470.

If I drag the Illegal Operation dialogue out of the way, I can still use MJ8 to play songs from the library however once I acknowledge the Illegal Operation, MJ8 closes.

This continues to happen :
- at least two out of three times that I start MJ8
- with a full library, 1800 files
- with no library ie an empty database
- with skins or with skins disabled
- even if I dont change a single default setting

LOCKING UP
When I do get it to run, MJ8 locks up regularly when I play a song.  This happens
- swapping between songs
- starting a new song
- irrespective of whether double click on a song or use the play button

No Illegal Operation, just locks and have to end task. Does not lock up while a song is playing.

TASKBAR
I use "autohide" for my windows task bar.  Often when MJ8 starts, the bar will no longer come up. I have to minimise or exit MJ8 to find it.

FILE IMPORT DETAILS
The summary of importing my music reports -

Number of file attempted to import : 1822
Number of new imported files : 1829
Number of files failed to import : 3
Total number of files : 1829

Shouldnt these add up??

SKINNING
Lots of skinning probs, but these are obviously only cosmetic!  When I work out how to put a screen capture in a message I'll show them to you.

You have other problems with your hardware or OS.  MJ 8.0 is stable on a lot of machines now. It isn't perfect, but it is a lot closer than what you see.

Try IE/Tools/Windows Update and see what Microsoft says about your OS.

Could also be hardware or software problems with video or sound card.

Memory problems can also create problems like this.

Good luck.

Isn't Windows wonderful?

Bill Gate must be a real jokester!  After all, where else can you pay $100 for a fancy package that doesn’t always work as advertised & provides endless hours of gut wrenching fun trying to resolve problems that should never happen in the first place?

Seriously though, you might want to look into the following.

Try running Norton Disk Doctor, then Norton Win Doctor, Then Norton Speed disk (in that order) to clean up any hidden problem areas.

You said you did a re-install of Win 98 SE.  How was it done?
I made the mistake one time of re-installing Windows, then I used my backup program to restore my files.  Problem was the backup program also restored the original problem!  The only way I finally resolved the problem was to reformat the disk drive, do a clean new install of Windows & completely reinstall all programs from scratch.

How old is you video card driver?  I have found some really strange problems with certain video drivers.  Try upgrading to the latest driver.  Sometimes that resolves many mysterious problems.

Also take a look at your sound card drivers.  I bought a brand new Creative Audigy card & was having some really weird problems.  After getting the latest drivers all the problems went away.

Have you ever done Windows Update from the Microsoft site?  I would highly recommend that you go to the Microsoft site & install all the Win 98SE updates.  They don’t always solve problems, but sometimes they do… that’s why they are there & they usually won’t hurt anything.

That’s the approach.  Take a step-by-step look at you system.  It really sounds like there is something wrong in the operating system.  Some little incompatibility that may be very hard to find.

Have you considered upgrading to Win XP?  No more DOS & is much more stable.  Is based on Win 2000 & NT, plus it has a lot of trouble shooting tools & a great help system built in.

Computer Chronicles (on public TV) last Saturday was all about Win XP.  The recommendation for who should upgrade was this…
Win 98 & 98 SE users… If your system is working ok, it’s a toss up, otherwise defiantly upgrade.
Win 95, Win ME users… No question, defiantly upgrade.
I totally agree with this.

One thought about upgrading.  Don’t upgrade over previous Windows.  It takes forever & bogs down your system.  Everything works much better with Win XP when you do a completely clean install on a freshly formatted drive.

Also, a few older DOS programs may no longer run & some really old hardware may not have XP drivers available.  Check with the Microsoft site for XP compatibility issues.

You know what they say about Windows… It is the only operating system that can take 20 days to find a problem & 20 seconds to fix.

Hope you find the problem as MJ 8 is a really great program & should be on EVERY computer!

It's scary, isn't it?

Planted tomatoes yesterday.  Working on sunflowers today, digging my way down the bed.

We have leaves now, here in Minnesota.

well me and sue moved 3 tons of rock this morning, this makes 5 tons total counting last week into landscaping, and put in some brick trim also.

All done, back hurts

Our tomatoes I have about 50 plants, and some are a nice size, they just need to turn red now.

Our squash is cooking up nice for dinner most nights (yellow and summer squash)

It is nice getting Lettuce from your own garden, a salad any day you want.

Not sure what is for dinner, maybe stake, shrimp, French fries, squash and salad since we just bought 30 lbs of New York strip. And it is easy to cook sue is tired i think i will maybe cook tonight also.

I made breakfast today coffee, (6.5 min) poached eggs on toast, with sausage (little salt and pepper).

I mowed the lawn today. Four hours on a rider! Big lawn. Now I'm gonna take a break and watch some of the Indy 500. Then after that, the Monoco F1 race. Which is much more exciting than any others. If your are not a fan of this type of racing , at least watch the start. The standing start of this race is spectacular to say the least. Today the race is going to be broadcasted on ABC. So folks who normally wouldn't get it, can see why Formula One drivers are some of the most highly paid athletes in the world. In the most expensive race cars in the world.

Tidbit - Some of the steering wheels cost in excess of $ 50,000.00.

Did I mention I LOVE Formula One?!?!?!!!

Another thought, get MJ to sponser a car and you will be viewed by more then 100 million people world wide. Next Page

Orkin Did Have A Race Car, As A Matter Of Fact They Still Have It, It Is Here In Pinehurst (Golf Capital Of The World).

It costs way too much.

Media Jukebox 7.2.28
JimH,

"CNET Rating: 9 out of 10

The good: Exceptional organization tool for music files; encodes songs and burns CDs in MP3 or WMA formats with ease; plays DVDs.
The bad: Clunky interface; steep learning curve."

If they cannot even get the version number correct, what chance is there for anything else being on target?

they just droped the "0"

once MJ 8 comes out (this comming week, i would think) they will do another review.

I would think it could only be better.

it does take abit more to learn since MJ has much more than the standard options that most media players have. i do not see that as a bad thing since it is easy to use in the first place.

I don't see there being a High learning curve however as they say.

Really it blows my mind they even said that, I find it rather easy and straight forward.

KingSparta,

Probably referring to new users in that respect. Or someone who has never used these programs before. I know, it still gives me suprise to find something MJ does that I wasn't aware of. However, some things that were not so obvious before seem to be taken care of now. Either that or I'm used to the way MJ operates now.
