Play Doctor repeats
« on: July 15, 2011, 07:31:29 pm »

Play Doctor sure likes to give the same prescription over and over. Even selecting lots of variety, PD has managed to repeat 2 songs in just over 3 hours. This despite having a library of over 20,000 tracks to choose from. Any chance we can get a no repeat option in PD?

Any chance of the 'no repeat' issue getting addressed?

Try to add this in your selection when play with PD
[Media Type]=[Audio] [Last Played]=>1h -[Duration]=30 ~n=200
you can change your limit in time, minutes, hour or days depend how you want, and you will not get again the same song like you say it.

If you play something where Play Doctor can't find a lot of similar music, duplicates will be more likely.

Duplicates are also more likely when you seed with something you don't have much of.  For example, if I make a Jewel mix and only have one Jewel album, I'm going to hear repeats from that one album.

Using accurate artist names and meaningful genres will also help.

I'm not seeding on any anything, just leaving the field blank and clicking play.

The duplicates I get are often common artists. I'll get the same CCR song twice in a hour, even though I have all their albums and most of their songs rated.

Sirgeo, I'll try adding that rule and see if it helps. I already have ~nodup=[Filename] but it doesn't have any effect.

I put this search into the search box: ~dup=[Name] and made a few Play Doctor mixes with no seed.  I saw some duplicates.

If there's no seed, I think it should probably prevent any repeats, at least per 100 tracks generated.

Sirgeo, sorry to say that this doesn't work. It seems that Play Doctor doesn't respect the set rules when adding additional songs to the playlist.

Coming in 16.0.157 and later:
Changed: Reduced how likely Play Doctor is to use the same file again when it's been used recently.

Thanks, Matt. I'll wait until .157 and give it a long, thorough testing before bugging you anymore about this one.  :D

I've been listening for about an hour.

So far, so good.

After several days of listening to Play Doctor, my opinion is that the latest change is a major improvement. Using Lots as my variety choice, playlists no longer become pigeonholed on a very small number of artist or albums. If a certain artist does become overbearing, skipping a few of their tracks thins the future selections and widens the pool back up.

In short, I'm pretty pleased with the current selection setup.

Glad to hear it's working better for you.

I really like the addition of Play Doctor.  I use it for making background listening mixes almost every day at home.

Glad to hear it's working better for you.

I really like the addition of Play Doctor.  I use it for making background listening mixes almost every day at home.

I really enjoy it, too. I've suggested before that Play Doctor should be included as a Play Mode like Shuffle or Repeat. Here are a couple advantages that a 'Doctor' mode would ideally add:

- Visual clue that Play Doctor is enabled, and higher visibility for PD in general
- Ability to Stop playback without disabling Play Doctor
- Ability to Add Tracks to playback without disabling Play Doctor (for the occasional 'Play as Next' insertion)
- Ability to 'Doctorize' an existing playlist

As always, thanks for consideration.
