FF/RW causes crash
« on: September 26, 2011, 06:53:28 pm »

First of all, love the software...my system is 2 channels and I love using WASAPI for bitperfect output to my DAC.

I'm having some problems fast forwarding or rewinding all video both SD and HD, including mkv, ts, and MPEG-2 recorded in Windows Media Center.  This video FF & RW perfectly using Windows Media Center.  When I fast forward or rewind in MC16 and press play, the video basically plays at 1 frame every few seconds and the audio stutters.  Sometimes I can get it to play by pressing stop and then restarting the video, other times I can't.

My system and config:
Core i5 750 2.66GHz (Lynnfield)
4GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5670

Red October HQ

I have also been getting random crashes where the entire screen will go one colour with black lines through it and a split second of audio will replay over and over.  I cannot get out of this state with the mouse, esc, CTRL-ALT-DEL, etc. and have to turn off the power to the HTPC to restart.

This may be a side issue, but I also have a question re which part of the HTPC is doing the work with ROHQ.  Does the graphics card play a large part of the end picture quality using ROHQ or would onboard motherboard video be just as good?  I am asking because I would eventually like a silent HTPC, ie fanless/no moving parts, and am wondering if one can get away with passively cooled CPUs such as the i3 2100, with SSD and 4GB RAM plus onboard video to run ROHQ with HD material??

Would I be better off, having an ATI card, to use the Cyberlink Video Decoder rather than ffdshow?  Or does ROHQ already use this?

Many thanks, Ben

You might try Red October Standard.

The processing isn't helped by the ATI.  It would be if the hardware was Nvidia.  No harm in trying onboard video.

An i3 with Nvidia should work.  The 430 is marginal.  Read a little more before you buy anything.

Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks for the response...

Does the ATI 5670 do anything for the picture quality over say onboard video?

Do nVidia cards help because you can use the LAV CUVID Decoder?  Is the LAV CUVID Decoder automatically selected for supported nVidia cards in Red October HQ?

I thought I read on the forums that the Cyberlink Decoder for ATI helped to run Red October HQ?  If it does can I use it by selecting Red October HQ with additional filters?

Finally, I have done some more research, seems the nVidia GT 520 has greatly improved H.264 decoding capabilities (VDPAU Feature Set D).  Even though it is an entry level model, would it be a lot better for my HTPC than my current ATI 5670 (which was a lot more expensive).  I don't play games.

Thanks, Ben
