MC16 doesn't allow surround music playback?
« on: September 23, 2011, 04:24:18 am »

When trying to playback surround music, I got this error message:

Playback could not be started using the format: 48000 Hz, 16 Bits Per Sample, 6 Channels.
This formate would owrk: 46000 Hz, 24 Bits Per Sample, 2 Channels.

And it asks if I want to change the output format setting.

But I can play the same surround music files perfectly fine with other media players like SMPlayer and VLC Player. I tried different settings for audio drive options in MC16, but it doesn't help.

Related to this, I've had problems with MC16 intermittently when playing DVD's--the center channel would be inaudible and only the surround ones are heard.

I've also had a similar error message if my bitrate wasn't set correct when using WASAPI output. Use Output Format in the the DSP Studio (Player > DSP Studio) and set your bitrate to 24 bit and your channels to 5.1. If you don't want 2.0 content upmixed to 5.1, then set Mixing to "no upmixing or downmixing."

MC is fully capable of playing multichannel music. The problem is often related to how your soundcard is set up.

I had trouble outputing multichannel audio (FLAC, converted by Media Center to PCM) via HDMI and WASAPI, and I got the same message. I reduced buffering and the problem went away.

I tried all of your suggestions and nothing worked. I still get the same error message.

What are your sound card settings?

In Windows:

1. Playback Devices->Configure->Set for 5.1 playback
2. Playback Devices->Your Device->Advanced->Set your default format to the highest your card supports

Mimic these settings in Audio Output in the DSP settings of MC.

Turn your receiver on and off.

Try changing to WASAPI - Event Style

Lower your buffer to 100ms or less...

I have everything setup as you described, except the default playback sample rate was 48KHz in Windows, and the soundard (Audiotrack Prodigy 7.1) was set to automatic selection of playback sample rate (dependent on source).

So, I changed Window's default to 192KHz, and then duplicated the settings in DSP Studio's Output Format, then changed Audio Output in Options to WASAPI - Event Style.

The file played back an incredibly distorted shrill mess of noise. I deactivated Output Format in DSP Studio, and everything was fine.

So essentially, it was really just a matter of changing the Audio Output. I tried WASAPI too, and it also worked (I don't know how Event Style is different, but they both work). I tried other settings too, and got this:

Don't work:
ASIO
Direct Sound
Disk Writer

Worked:
Kernal Streaming
WASAPI
WASAPI - Event Style
Wave Out

Thing just got worse.

While the above playback options I mentioned did work for the surround files, when I tried to play normal MP3's, it either played that harsh distorted noise, or crashed my computer to BSOD. I tried this numerous times and it always happened. Only Wave Out option worked with normal MP3's.

My ASIO doesn't work either, which is odd.

Any idea why I'm getting these BSOD crashes?

A blue screen is a hardware / driver issue.  I'd start by updating drivers to the latest.

I would recommend ASIO output with a Prodigy 7.1.

I already have the latest driver, and I cannot get ASIO to run in MC16 on that particular computer using the Prodigy  7.1.  The ASIO works fine in other apps though--just not in MC16. On my other computer, there's no such problem.

What happens when you use it?  Could you post a log?

Thanks.

In options, MC1 simply tells me no ASIO driver is detected, and if I try to play anyway, I get this error message:

"Something went wrong with playback.

Details:
Playback could not be started on the output 'ASIO' using the format '44100 Hz, 64 Bits Per Sample, 6 Channels'.

This output format may not be supported by your hardware. You can use DSP Studio to change the output to a compatible format.

Also, make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it is properly configured in playback options."

I then set in Windows to default settings of 44100 Hz, 16 Bits, Stereo, just to be sure it's at the most compatible setting, and I still get the above error messages, except it says 2 Channels instead of 6. What's confusing is the 64 Bits per sample part. Where is it getting the 64 Bits from? It should be 16 or 24 Bits at most, but 64? My OS is 64-Bit, but I don't think that's what it means?

Attached is the log for trying ASIO playback:

And now WASAPI-Event Style stopped working too. Attached is the log for it. (I had to uncheck some logging options since the file size was too big for attachments).

I would try uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling your sound driver.

ASIO is failing to load, meaning there isn't a valid 32-bit ASIO driver installed.

Here's the log snippet:
0002247: 2892: Playback: CASIOPlugin::Open: Start
0002247: 2892: Playback: CASIOPlugin::Open: Starting ASIO
0002247: 2892: Playback: CASIOPlugin::Open: Failed to start ASIO

Thanks.

I did that already, but I installed the 64-Bit version of the driver because my OS is 64-Bit. Does this mean if I want ASIO to work in MC16, I have to install the 32-Bit version instead? What's the drawback of that and how does that impact other programs that can work with the 64-Bit version of the driver?

What about the WASAPI problem?

Okay, I uninstalled the 64-Bit drivers, but now my computer cannot detect the sound card at all in Device Manager, no matter how many times I reboot or do a rescan for hardware changes. So, I'm now using the built-in audio on my MOBO, which is decent (HD surround sound), but it doesn't have ASIO. I fiddled around and finally got WASAPI-Event Style to work for both audio and surround video files. But I can't use my Prodigy 7.1 now since the computer won't even detect it anymore.

The HD surround sound of the MOBO isn't too bad--it's just not as good as the Prodigy 7.1 in terms of specs.

try another pci slot for your soundcard, you probably have an irq conflict or your soundcard is dead ...
