Individual FLAC files don't show in folder tree view
« on: November 07, 2011, 06:08:15 pm »

Hi folks, I'm new to this program so go easy on me. I'm used to using Foobar and decided to give this a go based on some views held by people I respect over on Head-fi. I'm pleased to say I think I hear an improvement, especially through headphones. However I'd like the interface to work as simply as Foobar and there's the rub. When I go into the folder tree on the left pane and navigate to a FLAC album all I see is one FLAC "file". For that matter I've just noticed the same thing with other file formats too. Is there no way to have individual tracks show up in the folder tree? If not that seems pretty daft. I'm used to just (in Foobar) dragging tracks or whole albums from the left pane (folder tree) to the right pane which I guess is a playlist. Is there no way to reproduce this working method with MC?

Thanks for any help or advice you can give me.

Welcome.  When you click on an album, you should see the tracks on the right.

Are you using cue files?  They might behave differently.

Thanks for the speedy response. I'm not using cue sheets and I know the tracks show in the right pane but I just like to have the tracks I've listened to in any particular session always displayed in the right pane.

Did you try Playing Now?

Also under playlists, you'll find recent playing now lists.

Ah, now we're talking. That works. So, just to clear up - there's no way to show track names in the left (folder tree) pane?

You could try the Explorer (under Drives & Devices).  It's like Windows Explorer.  But the browsing under Audio will always be faster.  It takes advantage of MC's database engine.

That was a good idea but it doesn't work either unfortunately. I don't think what I'm looking for can be done. Never mind though, I'm digging the sound (I actually thought all players sounded the same prior to this so maybe there's a placebo effect happening here which needs further study when I have more time).

There is. If you make a view e.g.

Album
Name

on expanding it, you get a list of all albums, if you expand the albums you see all the tracks

I do understand what you're saying but I want a list of folders, not albums.

Add an expression column instead then, that includes:

Code: [Select]
 [filename (path)]&datatype=

I use a view with Filepath instead of a library field

I hope nobody minds me posting this. If so I'll take it down right away.

This is how I have Foobar configured. It couldn't really be simpler really. I know MC has a great many more features but really it's the sound quality that's most important to me. In fact I think it may be worth the purchase price on it's own.

Anyway, as you can see there are two main panes (ignore the equalizer & album art, they're irrelevant). On the left there's a simple folder tree - note how individual FLAC files show up. On the right there's a playlist. I can right click on a file or folder in the left pane and add it to the playlist or I can simply drag & drop the same file or folder to the same playlist.

Is there any way to make MC behave in the same way?

Yes! Something exactly like that. How do I get that?

View > Split View > 2 Views.

Setup your right view to be Playing Now.
Setup your left view to be a panes view, using the expression: [Filename]&datatype=
Drag to shrink / close any areas you don't want shown (look for the double drag triangles on a border).

You can lock one of the views to preserve it (View > Split View > Lock View n).

I don't see "Split View" as an option anywhere. What am I missing?

Make sure you have Tools > Options > General > Features > Split View checked.  If not, check and restart MC.

Then see View > Split View.

Okay, I've now got two views but I don't know how to "set up" the view...

Well I've faffed around with this interface for long enough. I think it tries to do too much at once. What I want it to do is relatively simple I would have thought. Maybe it's me who's simple? Anyway, I'm going back to Foobar. It's unfortunate because I do think this program sounds better but there you go.  :(

Thanks to all who tried to help me, I really do appreciate it.  :)
