playlists, how to get them back
« on: December 08, 2011, 05:45:51 pm »

Recently upgraded from MC14. None of my many layered playlists survived. I tried export from 14 to app data and then tried to import in 17 but it looks like the folder hierarchy is not supported. Is this true ? Do I have to rebuild the whole thing? I also tried to copy/paste the exported folder using explorer, into 17's Library folder. 17's not recognizing it. Where should the playlist folder reside for use in MC17? Maybe I've got that wrong?
Help please.....I've spent years making these playlists and need to get them usable in MC17.
Thanks,
RW :-\

addendum to the above: I've searched the topic and found the "back up library" suggestion. Will this overwrite additions and changes I've made to the MC17 library since installation a couple weeks ago? This would not be a good solution.

Try exporting as m3u from MC14 and importing them in MC17.

::)Bumpity-bump.............I have tried the import/export method. When I try to import the playlist folder, I am only allowed to select items to import as files, when I try to import a whole folder, the window just opens the folder to give access to individual files. Is there a way to import my whole playlist collection with it's folder hierarchy intact? Can I just copy and paste the old folder to a new location? What would that location be?
Thanks,
RW

The only solution to preserve playlist hierarchy is to make a library backup in v14 and restore it in v17.

OK, but what will happen to library updates and changes I've made in MC17 since installation a couple weeks ago? Lost, I assume.
Thanks

Unfortunately, lost.  However, you might be able to get changes back by selecting files after restoring your library and doing Library Tools > Update Library (from tags).

If you moved files on disk, just tell auto-import where you keep things and it should mostly sort it out.

Make a backup in v17 before doing anything so you always have that to roll-back to.

This seems to have worked pretty well....thanks Matt. An easy way to move playlists around while preserving the file hierarchy might be something to consider in future versions.
