Stability issues
« on: December 30, 2011, 01:58:04 pm »

I'm seeing many software hangs that i'm forced to use task manager to close it.
I get most of my hanging in or closing the option window.
But i can crash just playing music or moving around the UI.
Some times just having it sit open for a while will hang it.

JMC version 17.0.60
I also saw these crashes on version 16 stable.

System Info:
Workstation 6.1 Service Pack 1 (Build 7601)
Intel Pentium III 2658 MHz MMX / Memory: Total - 4194 MB, Free - 1803 MB
Internet Explorer: 9.0.8112.16421 / ComCtl32.dll: 5.82.7601 / Shlwapi.dll: 6.1.7601 / Shell32.dll: 6.1.7601 / wnaspi32.dll: N/A

I run Microsoft security essentials
I also have a Hauppauge 2250 Tuner card installed.

Here are some of the log errors i've seen. But nothing that really seem to point to anything helpful.

I was having stability problems too lately. MC would freeze up and sometimes crash unexpectedly. I went into Event Vewer and saw a buch of errors called "SideBySide". Further research showed that they were related to Microsoft Security Essentials. I think Jim has a link to issues with this program. Appearently soemthing went haywire in the program. i completely removed it and reinstalled a new version and all has been weel so far. No more freezing, crashing, and my whole system seems quicker and more responsive. It's been a week now and no issues (knock on wood).

Ok so been testing a few days with the "MCE" fix. I think it "might" be helping. I still get a hangs 80% of the time on option menu closing.

So i don't really think that was the real issue.
Got any other ideas?  :)

Did you open/look at Windows Event Viewer to see what, if anything, is showing up as an error?

Occasionally my system will stall (freeze) when scrolling through my large database of movies/music. It takes a few seconds for things to start working/scrolling again. MC doesn't crash - just stops responding for a few seconds. I think it more related to my drives spinning down but I haven't really lookied into it.

Another thing I did that I thinked helped is that I completly removed Windows Media Center (Control Panel>Programs and Featurers>Turn Windows featurers on/off). There is nothing in Windows Media Center I am using anyways and by removing it I stopped getting the MC update error, and gained some disk space.

I wonder is i'm having issues because i'm running Windows 7 Home. But i run everything from shared network drives.
I'll switch my library to the real drive location and see what happens.

I had the same issue after upgrading to MC17, mainly during editing DLNA settings. Since 3 days I do not have any issue now. My impression is, that the key to success was the deactivation of the "iphone support" ("options - general - features"), but I'm not 100% sure.

Maybe you check this.

Take care
Volker

Microsoft Security Essentials has caused problems in the past.

Switching to standard drives did not help.

I uninstalled and reinstalled last night.
I'll see if I can keep it as chnages as simple as possible while I track it stability.

I'm not sure if this is a stability issue, but I've been experiencing weird hang time from MC17.

At first it's fine, but after skipping forward to the next track a few times, it will say 'Buffering...' and not go immediately to the next file.

This seems to happen more if I play flacs rather than mp3s, but they both do it regardless.

I turned off all of the Windows media center stuff because I read on some other thread that has been a problem before. But it hasn't solved my prob.

It seems weird to me that it would need to buffer at all, I have 6GB of RAM and don't really run any intense programs. This issue happens even if I'm running no other programs at all, which leads me to believe it's a MC17 issue.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

No offence but that is way off topic. Please start a new topic.

Np, I understand i feel the same way some times.

OK so after re-installing things be a lot more stable.

So far I've only been making small change.
I will switch skins next.

I'll see how much i can customize and keep it stable. Before i start redoing the TV tunner setup.
