Is there a way to modify it, hopefully without installing DirectVobSub? It's quite useful for displays that have issues with fairly bright subtitles, such as the current default.
Also, it'd be great if drag'n'drop worked for sidecar subtitles, instead of having to rename files to "index", "video_ts" etc. Auto-detection of subtitle files in the video file's folder could also work.

For what type of subtitles do you want to control transparency?

For .srt. BD and DVD embedded subtitles usually employ a more transparent look than what MC uses as default for .srt anyway, and in most cases their transparency level is ideal. (Maybe there's a BD standard for that, I've noticed a much higher uniformity in BD titles, than DVD).
I've seen the sidecar rules, but it still involves file renaming. Of course, this is mainly an issue when opening disc or disc folders where the subtitle has to be renamed to something irrelevant like index.srt.
