Kinect and MC17 theater view integration??
« on: February 03, 2012, 02:33:37 pm »

Hi,

Kinect hardware and SDK is available now: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/kinectforwindows/develop/new.aspx

It will be cool to operate MC17 from couch just via hands :).

Thanks,
Osho

That might actually be very cool. Imagine your TV or Projector screen as a giant touch screen. Navigating around. It would work very well for casual navigation and playback I think. Perhaps not for a whole evening browsing and playback of music though...

It would be very cool... for a couple of hours when you first get it, and for a few minutes every time you have new guests over.

Even I would get one (nothing like a pointless new must have gadget to play with)!

Yeah, I should have added "I'll probably get one" to my previous post. :)

Yeah I want one!  What I don't understand is why it would not work with MC now - doesn't the kinetic HW/SW just translate the movement into keyboard or MCE shortcuts or have I missed something?

My thoughts exactly a Media Center remote works OOB so why not Kinect.

Yes and no. There may be some standard movements that would translate into keyboard or mouse but if you were to implement specific gesture recognition (say wave your hand up to scroll up in theater view, do another gesture to pause playback etc.) then more support would be needed in each application.

Thanks,

Sure but if it works for MS Media Centre (and it uses translation to MCE RC or KB) we would be all good?  I'll see if I can track one down and give it a go.

Yeah Right....there is 1 retailer in Australia for "Kinect for Windows" and the price is $300 - very much overinflated from the 360 version!

But isn't that about US$0.02 at current AU$ exchange rates!

No - it is A$300 so about the same cost of the Greek Debt!  Seriously, it is really not much of a push by MS down our way and for this price I could buy a the whole 360 with it's version of the Kinect

While it looks cool, it also looks like a way to seriously work out your arms. The navigation looks really slow and with hundreds and thousands of music and movies files, it just doesn't seem like a smooth and efficient way of navigating. Now if there was a way that voice support could be added to MC, that would be the cat's meow.

It totally depends how you program this thing. If you program it to make on up movement move down one cover, then you'll en up with a lot of workout. If it's programmed in a way that the mouse flicks or touch flicks is working today however, we might have a very functional remote control.
